Point Blank Shot and Far Shot

Dragon Mag had a long article how to build your own feats and the DON'Ts. One of them was: Never bug with the 30ft.

y'know, i find this really irritating. they've obviously messed with it quite a bit already. but what? mere gamers who've played this game for decades and this system since it came out aren't good enuff to? as if some game designer who got his job 2 years ago is better at this than people who've played this half their lives or more.

If half the threads on this website, or any other for that matter, are any indication as to the play-balancing skills of the gamer community, we're screwed. It's not that the threads are messed up, but more than half of the thread starters have no clue as what they're talkin' about. Somebody here actually needed to ask if the acid damage caused by Melf's Acid Arrow was magical acid. So, largely, yeah, the designers are a hell-of-a-lot better at this. Individualy though, there are some really talented people on these boards.

Also, playing the game is a lot different than building it. The people who built the game will know and understand all the ways in which the 30ft. interact with other parts of the game. If they create ways to change that, they'll know all the ways it can change the game around it. I can't speak for the rest of you "mere players" but I know this one doesn't think he has that kind of inside knowledge of the system, even after DMing it for a while. If Monte or Bruce came out and said, "hey, change the 30ft. all you want, it won't do anything bad!" I'd take their word for it. As it is, most of the voices involved in the game's design say "don't mess with 30ft." and I believe them. It doesn't have to do with us not being "good enough" about it, it's all about perspective. They built the game, and as I see it, they do know more about the inter-relatedness of its parts than I do.

Oh I'm not too sure about that. Some people are frickin' idiots.

LOL
well, i can't argue with that! i consider my wrists suitably smacked for that one! ;) but in all seriousness, absolutely certain people surely shouldn't be allowed with arms length of a DMG. with reference to vertain post starters on this board, we're all here to help each other out ... or did i miss the memo?

but there are quite a few people who can make judgements like that. now i don't automatically assume that i'm one of them, but i'm more than willing to try. if after i try it doesn't work, then i'll say "fine, it doesn't work." but until someone can say to me that something shouldn't be done for x, y and z reasons, i'm not simply gonna accept: "you can't because you can't."

and once again, i'd like to re-iterate, that this thread was not specifically about sneak attacks! :)

x: Why bother?
y: It's crazy.
z: You could get a rash.

:D

x: Why bother?
a: coz i'm bored?
y: It's crazy.
a: all the more reason to do it!
z: You could get a rash.
a: i've had this before, it goes away with a lil sulphur powder
:D

Butit's the sneak attacks that are the most powerful way to abuse this. The extra +2 for specialization or the +1 to hit and damage from pointblank shot are not game breakers. +10d6 sneak attack is.

Is there anyone who thinks this is a bad idea?

It's simple enough to make extending the 30' point-blank range into a high-level prestige class ability. Said PrC, naturally, wouldn't grant sneak attacks.

I actually did this once for an archer PrC I made some time back. Basically you could do all sorts of funky stuff within the first range increment of your bow, including getting Weapon Spec and PBS damage.
