• NOW LIVE! Into the Woods--new character species, eerie monsters, and haunting villains to populate the woodlands of your D&D games.

Praise and element or aspect of a game or edition you don't like.

Pathfinder has awesome artwork and art direction, and amazing support with adventures and supplements. Seriously, have you heard of another RPG where an adventure module was turned into a school play?

It's something I sadly miss in <favorite RPG>

Bringing balance to the force... hehe

I like the possibility in Rolemaster ( I think it was) to roll badly at level up and actually get worse at a skill.

Not sure if I would like it much though if I played. It was an interesting idea.
Having GMed RM for close to twenty years, I can say that it probably reads better than it plays! Arguably, at least, it does contribute to the overall balance of RM's level-up mechanics - but for a player, it can certainly detract from the thrill of level gain to roll a stat loss! Especially at high levels, where the effects of the stat loss might outweigh any bonuses from skill development.

Anyway, that's something I don't particularly like about a game that overall I like a lot.

To reverse that, and get back to the thread topic - I very much like the aesthetic of Monte Cook's Arcana Unearthed (ceremonies, rituals, giants, sibbicai, verrik, etc). At one stage I was tinkering with a conversion to Rolemaster, but never got finished with it.

When 3rd edition came out, I was blown away by the consistency: in appearance, in rules, everything. Compared with 2nd edition, this was a real eye-opener.

I like the critical hit tables from MERP.

And I like Larry Elmore's artwork for BECMI.

D&D Basic (1991 version/Rules Cyclopedia): The game that started it all for me!

AD&D 1e/2e: More options than Basic, showed me how deep the D&D rabbit hole went. Also, settings!

3.0/3.5: Same great D&D experience, more coherent ruleset.

4e: See above, but much easier to DM!

Beyond: ???

Edit: Pathfinder is damn sexy! I wish Paizo made stuff for 4e :(
