Honestly, if the wargaming aspect of RPGs turn you off - D&D may not be the game for you. Sure there are lots of folks who do it, but IMO they are swimming upstream.

YES! If what you really want to do is engage in improvisational group storytelling, you don't need ANY rules.

Hey mythusmage, if you want a really excellent system that emphasizes roleplaying, you might enjoy Amber. It's a diceless, randomization-free rpg. Very very cool imho, but I really like the Amber Chronicles that the game is based on (by Roger Zelazny).

I hear you, but I don't want to be bound and gagged by people without imagination. I've got about 80% of my players that want a description, and then to kill the bad things in the room. I've got 20% that think that without a mat and figures I must somehow be cheating...

I find this reasoning hilarious. If I want to cheat, the characters are dead, no questions asked. I'm the GM.

Man, great game. Great suggestion!

One thing that I've noticed is that when you just have descriptions, it's either a whole lot easier to flank bad guys and position fireballs or it's a whole lot harder depending upon the mood of the DM (and the DM in question). One particularly egregious "we don't need a mat" encounter featured two specters who somehow managed to move through the entire party to attack the archers at the back of the party without provoking any attacks of opportunity in the first round of combat. Yeah right.

Everway is also a diceless game, but with some kind of randomization via tarot cards :D. Of course, these cards still allow lots of interpretation ;). It's a game that also furthers roleplaying - at least in people who have an idea what to do if they have to fall back on their imagination :).

Nobilis is also a diceless game, but I don't see why "roleplaying" should equate to "not D&D."

Nobody says that D&D doesn't allow for roleplaying. It's just the case that the many options of D&D also allow for a wargame style play. Games like Amber, Everway or Nobilis don't really have this option, or at least it needs quite a stretch ;).

It doesn't necessarily.

However, at least to some extent, it seems that mythusmage finds it difficult to get roleplaying from his players (ergo this thread). Therefore it seemed logical to me that Amber might suit his needs. It is a great game. :) It doesn't get nearly enough pimpin.
