Are you kidding me?

If it is, is it as an amphibious beast, or despite it? How much more sucessful could it be if it became a true RPG, instead of the dual natured creature it is?
I'd like to go out on a limb here and state emphatically that D&D is a role-playing game.

D&D is not a wargame, nor has it ever been (roots or no). This whole idea that just because an RPG makes use of minis it is not "true" roleplaying is [REMOVED TO PROTECT ERIC'S GRANDMOTHER].

If your sessions devolve into extended combats where the player contribute nothing more than pushing minis around on a mat, offensive personal comments removed - PS. You need to find new players, present them with situations that cannot be solved with combat, or just sit down and have a group chat about everyone's expectations and needs. Switching systems is irrelevant.*

*Unless, of course, you simply don't enjoy whatever system you use now, which likely has nothing to do with the system and everything to do with you.

If your sessions devolve into extended combats where the player contribute nothing more than pushing minis around on a mat, then the problem is that your players (and maybe you, too) suck. You need to find new players, present them with situations that cannot be solved with combat, or just sit down and have a group chat about everyone's expectations and needs. Switching systems is irrelevant.*

I'm all for more roleplaying in RPGs but you're missing the fundemental point. You are roleplaying fighters, warriors and magicians. You're roleplaying characters in some type of struggle whether its a huge land war or a war over whose dungeon this is with some bugbears. It's very difficult to truly roleplay a fighters without any rules to dictate how they fight. Minis help players roleplay in a three-deminsional world. Outside of the combat reasons, your character can get a feel as to what is visually around him without hte dm going through two pages of description per room/encounter.

I don't think he was really disagreeing with you.

But I still want to know what the heck is "true" roleplaying and who decides what it is?

I'm not dissing minis. I'm pro-mini. :) I'm also not dissing pushing minis around a battlemat all night. My point is just that, if mythumage's group isn't doing enough roleplaying for his taste, he should do something about that, not blame D&D.

IOW, I agree with you.

This might be true (I don't know Mythusmage), but there is a point in that 3.5 lends itself to the belief (and you can hear it on this thread) that you MUST have a mat and minis. Simply put, they're a tool to help the game, not a requirement. That was only confused by groups that had other problems in previous versions, with this one it seems endemic.

Gotcha.

Honestly, any RPG that gives a dang about position and distance is aided by minis. It's not a roleplaying vs. wargaming thing. It's simply laying out a scene so that it doesn't exist solely in the GM's head, thereby turning the game into asking permission from the GM. "Am I in position to flank?" "Um... sure."

They're not required, but they can't hurt.

Proclamation - I run D&D games. I have exciting action and complex roleplaying (often at the same time). I sometimes game with a battlemat and miniatures and sometimes I do without. I really enjoy D&D and fail to see the problems mentioned in this thread and often elsewhere.

Anyone else?

Quoted for shameless "Me, too!"
