Like any show, the first season's pretty mediocre. It does have some shining moments, though, as well as some real stinkers.
Overall, you should watch the pilot movie and season 1, though, just to get a feel for who everyone is and what they stand for in the beginning. There's a
lot going on between the Narn and Centauri in this season that you don't want to miss, plus a couple episodes dealing with the planet B5 orbits that are critical to the plot later on.
But, to me, there are two episodes midway through the season that are subtly vital to the series: one (
Mind War) is primarily about telepaths (and introduces a recurring antagonist), but also involves an ex of the Commander's ignoring warnings about a planet she wants to explore. And another (
Signs and Portents)involves a recovered Centauri heirloom, and attempts by various parties to 'acquire' it from Londo.
The important bits have nothing to do with the main plot of those episodes, though. Rather, it's one brief scene at the end of each that sets you up for some major plot points later in the series. They almost seem like throwaways at first, but they really are important. Those would be G'kar's scene with the plant in the first, and what happens to the Raiders in the second.
On a personal note, the latter left me thinking "WTF was that?!?" for a good five minutes afterwards. That was the point I knew I'd be addicted to this show.
