D&D 5E Should standing up from prone trigger opportunity attack?

Makes sense,

But what if there's a rogue or paladin (or both) standing next to you, that you know will attack before the target? That would make trying to knock them prone significantly more appealing, no?

A paladin would do the equivalent of 2-3 of your attacks on his turn. Easy enough to adjust X that way. A rogue probably does similar as well.

I feel like some here are only looking at the case where you succeed at the prone attempt. When you flat out fail it’s a single attack no advantage.
I, for example, am assuming using the case where it makes sense. Prone the caster, not the ogre. With a STR-based character with proficiency it should occur most of the time against a non-STR focused, non-Athletics trained foe.

Plus, as 3.5 has shown us, if there's an exploitable mechanic, builds will be made to do so. there are already grappling builds, focusing around expertise in Athletics (rogue 1, Bard 2, or Progidy racial feat) or Advantage on STR checks (Barbarian Rage). Or both.

No, it should not. It is a bad idea to allow have standing from prone provoke attacks. It makes shoving far too powerful of an option, especially for characters designed to do it well.

Eh, I don't think it's particularly overpowered. But I'd be hesitant to change the combat rules just for the sake of making a single maneuver feel impressive.

Keep in mind that the players' characters are all going to be affected by this rule change more than their opponents are going to be. That orc in the corner is going to be knocked prone once, maybe twice, in its entire short life, but the fighter in the party is going to be knocked down dozens and dozens of times over the course of his career.

In case you're interested, we houserule it thus: standing up from prone uses 1 square of movement. Or 2 squares if you're wearing Light armor, 3 squares if you're wearing Medium armor, and 4 squares if you're wearing Heavy armor.

I really don't find that at all. 5e is extremely robust, one major limiter is that everyone only gets 1 Reaction anyway (unless you wander off into the weeds of Unearthed Arcana & 3rd party), this is just a way of enabling PCs to get their Reaction attack off reliably without needing Polearm Master, Riposte, etc.

I find the main thing is just reminding players they've already used their Reaction, so no opp att.
