So, what was the first product where D&D's soul was sold?

Exactly who are those who are in "general agreement" on this point? You and two other guys?

How does WotC sell lots of stuff that their customers don't "need"? Guns to their heads? Threat to release dire weasels in their houses?

Had a dire weasel in my house once. It would provoke me to buy just about anything.

i don't think Gary quit his insurance job and asked for the money to start his venture without some idea that it would be profitable.

people were clamoring to make copies of copies of the handscrawled notes of people who had played with Dave and Gary.

Sorry for being dense (I failed my Int check): Is that a yes or a no?

Hey...pray the WotC goons don't release dire weasels in your house. It was awlful. I had to hire an adventuring party to clear them out. There goes my daughter's college fund.

And that's what your new edition gets you! Back in my day I could've given them 5sp each and they'd have been happy to get it!

I had a Horst Wesel in my house once, took the allies nearly four years to get rid of the damn thing.*

*=READ A HISTORY BOOK!

I think a better (and less inflammatory) question would have been:

"At what point did you stop trusting that Official material published for D&D would be (for lack of a better word) balanced?"

I'd say that, for me, that was when we incorporated the 1e Unearthed Arcana in our games. After that, we really looked long and hard at new material before incorporating it in our games.

The first product to sell out? That was the original D&D set. It eventually sold out. Then Gary made more.

Like question receives like answer. :p
