So you dislike 3e...Why post here?

Tuerny

First Post
Greetings,

I couldn't help but notice that a number of posters on this board seem to, whenever the mention of favorite systems pops up, can't help but mention that you strongly dislike 3e or favor some other system. In addition another contigent of posters seems to enjoying deriding 3e on other boards while remaining silent on the subject here.

Now, don't get me wrong, I am not suggesting you shouldn't post here. Anyone who is respectful, follows Eric's Grandma's rules, and has a desire to should be able to post here.

I am just wondering why you do it if 3e galls you so much?

You sure? To me, threads like this say, "We're an exclusive club! How dare you disagree with us?" This makes me uncomfortable.

Off the top of my head, I can think of lots of reasons why fans of 1e would want to be active here. A few include...

- 3e or no, this place is a wonderful repository of good ideas for any fantasy RPG.

- They may play 3e reluctantly while preferring 1e. Thus, rules explanations for 3e are still pertinent.

- They may be investigating the system to see if it fits their preferences.

- They love D&D, but may not be thrilled with 3e. They come here to keep in touch with the industry.

You get the idea. I would prefer that we be inclusionary, not exclusionary, and not insult folks just because 3e isn't their favorite game system. (Tuerny, that isn't directed at you - you weren't, but I have seen it here and elsewhere. Being insulted because you happen to like a particular game isn't fun for anyone.)

I'll admit 3E is not my fave system . In fact my fave systems are not D&D or D20 based at all. But that doesn't mean I don't like D&D, in fact I love D&D overall, and 3E is growing on me.

AFAIC ENWorld is the hub for ALL D&D activity as well as 3E/D20 activity. The discussions are fun to participate in and for the most part, are civil, no matter what the subject matter.

I'd love to find some older edition communities that are as fun or useful as ENWorld. Mortality's older edition community is small, and not too exciting to participate in, and the constant bickering over at Dragonsfoot (which has alot of promise otherwise) is tiresome. I do participate on occasion at the Wizards OOP boards, but it seems like the same old discussions starting up every couple of weeks..."what was your fave classic module?"..etc etc..even an old pre-1E fart like myself gets sick of that.

I also haunt the Necromancer Games forums quite a bit.

Yes, I am very sure. I figured I might be treading on thin ice when I posted this, so I included the caveat. I honestly do not care if anyone who dislikes 3e posts here. If they enjoy it more power to them. The more the merrier :)
It just seems kind of masochistic, and I was wondering why they did it. (Not that there is anything wrong with masochism, mind you. I occassionally go and read Dragonsfoot or other basions of olders edition just for amusement. But I really doubt i would ever particpate there or even post there.)

Tuerny, just another point: I have also noticed several regular posters from the Dragonsfoot boards posting here, testing out the waters, and seeing if the stories are true, and we really eat babies and tear up our parking tickets instead of paying them. :)

I think it's a good thing to see new faces here, myself (and I recognize that you do, too), and part of what you are seeing is part of a sort of "unofficial exchange program": PCat, Maddman75, Psion, myself and several others have been exchanging dialong in various threads over at Dragonsfoot (a primarily 1E community). Some posters such as MerricB, already have dual citizenship here and at Dragonsfoot. :) So, some of the recent "I don't care for 3E" posters may well be part of this.

Finally, we actually used to have a rather vocal anti-3E contingent back in the early days who jsut loved to hang around with friends from the boards: Coik was one poster who immediately comes to mind. However, most of these now post exclusively on Nutkinland, as the emphasis is not 3E there, but more for the 3E community that sprung up around Eric Noah's site.

That makes sense.

But I have to ask....does this mean the rest of you don't tear up parking tickets and eat babies?

Yes, I remember Coik. I actually talked to him for a few years before ENWorld started. I met him back on the AOL boards back when we were both big Planescape fans. Of course we went our seperate ways as our RPG interests began to diverge widely....

Ah well.
It happens.
