Spells that can be beneficialy "Enlarged"

First Post
In looking at the Enlarge metamagic feat there appears to be limited benefit to spells if they are not a ray, cone, or have a significant portion of their effect dependant on a range increment.

Can someone enlighten me on what spells they have seen gain the most benefit from being Enlarged?

Just a reminder that Enlarged is NOT the same as Widened....

Thx.

How about the various monster summoning spells? You can only summon them within short range, so having this range doubled gives you a much larger area in which to place your critters to attack the enemy. It also gives them more room to maneuver or give chase.

As you say, though, some spells will simply get more benefit from this feat than others. That's true of many of the feats, though. I do like the idea of a 10th level wizard shooting fireballs at targets 1000 feet away. This is especially useful when flying, for instance.

Burning hands can be really nice at taking out a whole ton of low levels. Mostly because it's area is much nicer than your typical cone. Dimension door is also a nice one to enlarge if you want to go really far.

The "best" spells to enlarge (apart from getting the extra range)are:

1. Lightning bolt (getting a wide bolt at full range, or double range with a nornal bolt)
2. Magic circle against xxx (20' radius will cover most of your allies)
3. Minor Globe of Invulnerability (same as above, but don't move with you)
4. Burning Hands (Okay, but its a pretty weak spell anyway)

My arcane devotee only got spells up to 4th level, so I haven't looked at the high-level spells.

Would magic circles and globes both fall under widen as opposed to enlarge?

Yes and no :) They are emanation spells, and thus work with widen. But the area of globes are defined by their range, thus enlarge work on globes as well. The magic circles are touch spells, and thus seem to be unaffected by enlage, that was an error.

The most obvious spells to use with Enlarge are those that are circle or cone based and that have a Range listed:

1) Dragon Breath (from R&R)
2) Cone of Cold
3) Holy Word - take out a whole army of extra-planar baddies with this one.

For really ugly effects, take the Arcane Devotee prestige class (FR). At first level, an AD gets to use the Enlarge feat for free (no level raise, normal casting time) a number of times per day equal to her charisma modifier.

Since Enlarge can be applied multiple times to the same casting, you can see how this can get really ugly.

Eg., Sorceror 9/ Arcane Devotee 1 (possible with the right feats), and charisma 20 (easily obtainable with level raises, items) casts Cone of Cold, Enlarged 5 times. IIRC, the Range is 25 ft. + 5 ft/2 levels. Thus a regular CoC would go fifty feet, but this one would go three hundred feet. Since it's a cone, its width is based on its length, which leaves a massive area that this spell just covered.
