Spiked Chain

In OA there is a weapon called the Chain it is a 1d6/1d6 Bludgening weapon which can be use as either a reach weapon or a double weapon. There are two other weapon in OA that can be used in the same manner. Since the damage on these weapon seems at least one step less than the spike chain I would say that it is not an over sight but rather a balance issue that the spiked is reach but not a double weapon.

spiked chain

it was the diagram that threw me off. I have a player interested in using one. I thought it was a double weapon with reach. glad to see its more balanced then that. :D

Well that and the fact that it deals less damage than the majority of reach weapons that don't require a feat to use. I've seen some effective characters using spiked chains but as a player, I'd rather use a glaive, a greatsword and quickdraw--especially with the 3.5e changes to DR.

Yeah, the weapon is only balanced by the possibility of meeting kytons :D

My main problem with the normal reach weapons is that while you can use quickdraw to draw a close combat weapon once something closes you are then stuck in that mode.

IE you are fighting someone just north of you. You take your actions that round. Later in the round an enemy moves through a square within 10' of you. With a spiked chain you would still get to AOO him. With the Greatsword that you just drew however you don't get that.
