While I sincerely hope they don't, I'm willing to bet the season ends with Caleb having to choose between the academy and his mother.

More than likely, it will be some kind of situation where he will be forced to betray Starfleet in some way to be with his mom.

Hope I'm wrong on that one!
Unfortunately, episode 10 is apparently titled "Rubicon" ... so there's a chance you're right.

Just did a bit of googling and found this:

In the season finale, the return of an old enemy forces Nahla to confront her own mistakes as the cadets and instructors undertake a seemingly impossible mission to save the Federation, while defining the future of Starfleet

So, hopefully nothing much to do with only Caleb, but writers love their double meanings and "surprises" I still suspect the mother angle will pop in, likely at the end.

Kelsey Grammer (Captain Morgan Bateson) would like a word!

Though in today's television, you're probably right.
That's an interesting one. Right between Cheers and when Frasier started, he was just the 4th-6th most popular actor* on that highly acclaimed show that was off the air (probably on par with David Ogden Stiers and his guest appearance in season 4). He was 'I know him.' big, but not really the big deal he would be a few years later. And by then, they'd already given him a role (a captain from 90 years prior who had been stuck in a time-loop) where having him show up again would have required a really specific script.
*guessing Danson, Harrelson, and Alley were the most popular (as they got movies in the next few years), and no idea the order after that.

We've already established that Nahla and Braka have history, so there's the "old enemy." She let Caleb escape as a kid, so we have the "mistakes." I figure Braka comes at Caleb wit, "Here's you mom, right in front of you. Do what i say or she's toast." and Nahla has to think of a way out of it.
