Watching the episode I was like, "Surely this time I have it right and this is the guy from Voltron: Legendary Defender?" And yes, Rhys Darby was Coran. I liked the episodes. I am sad for Spock, but we knew it was coming at some point. And they handled it skillfully. My Dad liked them too I think. I always watch SNW with him.

So are we to read from this that Trelane is OFFICIALLY a Q? I know that's always been the fan theory, but with John DeLancie voicing his dad, I think that settles it?
Or at least the offspring of a Q and a Q. As I recall from the Voyager episode, the whole point of Q trying procreation was to shake things up in the Q continuum by introducing something new. So he's either Q or Q-adjacent.

Trelane from TOS is explicitly made a child of Q (John de Lancie with a cameo voice appearance, though not named), and appears here doing mischief. I liked that everyone describes the character as being of different species, and no one notices the inconsistency. Chappel's fella is roguishly endearing, but a little too ideal, and he absolutely should not be dating someone who he is supervising in a fellowship. Unethical academic, even with his 241 papers.
In follow up to this, a few thoughts.

I believe that at different points Trelane (or Q, Q Jr, Q 3, whatever) was using its powers to appear as a different individual for everyone. I took it that in the initial scene with Spock he appeared as a Vulcan bartender to Spock and maybe was not even visible to the rest of the crowd. As the wedding planner I took it that he was Andorian looking to everyone. That said, with the mind control power being used, not really an issue one way or the other.

As to Dr. Korby, not sure how familiar you are with TOS @Kobold Stew. Dr. Korby appeared in Season 1, Episode 9 "What Are Little Girls Made Of?"

Korby's character is similar in both episodes, with ego and arrogance on show. The age difference between the portrayals is a bit jarring considering there are only supposed to be about 5 years, maybe 6, between the events. But the unethical behaviour I think is hinted at in the original TOS portrayal, and copied in a slightly different way here.

Cheers :)

There certainly was a big tonal difference between the two episodes, I was glad I didn't watch them in quick succession.

The second one was pretty fun, my only annoyance was that they did rather damsel-ify Christine.
Understand where you are coming from regarding making Christine the damsel in distress (although oblivious perhaps), or at risk.

I think that was part of the point of the episode, and not made explicit, but implicit in Spock's comments at the end to La'an. Trelane (Q, Q Jr, Q 3, etc.) is known for making marionnettes or playthings of others. He notably does so in his original appearance "The Squire of Gothos" where he literally makes characters, including a female officer dance. At least that is my recollection, although the synopsis I can find online does not mention this.

Cheers :)

I still haven't watched yet (been doing a Stranger Things rewatch with my teens), but I see that Kiwi actor Rhys Darby plays Trelane! Getting on Star Trek is quite the coup for him, although I suppose he's just following in Karl Urban's footsteps really.

I love this show so much. Anson Mount is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors. There's a lot of fanservice for fanservice's sake, but it's less jarring than the Kelvin timeline films for me.

The timeline is screwy as heck, but at least they've set up reasons why. Encountering Trelane long before Kirk does (with the cheeky bastich even mentioning Tribbles, no less!) is a prime example.

There's silly episodes, but for the most part they've been fun- and really, it's not like silly stuff hasn't been canonized since the very beginning. The tonal whiplash is real though, it's hard to go from "war is hell" to "haha, Trelane, he's so funny!" though at least one character is holding onto some serious PTSD- I'm glad they're doing more with Ortegas finally- love the character, but she's become something of a meme with her "I fly the ship" mantra.

Prequels are funny things. You know what's supposed to happen (which is why it's hard for me to get attached to Sam), but with the timeline being as fuzzy as it is, it keeps me guessing.

Finally, I love Pelia, but I miss Hemmer so much!

Aaah! That's so awesome. I had forgotten about him, though of course now you say it that's a really great Easter Egg. Thanks so much!

The TOS episode is the one with the really big bald robot played by the guy who had been Lurch.

EDIT: I have just learned that the Lurch actor also played the Gorn in "Arena" and Bigfoot in The Six Million Dollar Man.

It’s a tradition for Lurch actors. The guy who played Lurch in the Raul Julia Addams Family movies played a few roles in modern Star Trek as well.
