Syfy cancels Eureka

Say goodbye to the little town that could: Syfy cancels Eureka

Just last week Syfy "hoped" they could pick up six more episodes for a possibly final season of Eureka. Sadly, Syfy has changed its mind. There will be no more Eureka after the 2012 season. The series has been canceled.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that despite Syfy's earlier promise to give Eureka six more episodes, with the slight possibility of more after that, the network decided instead to pull the plug on the show for good. The fifth season will be Eureka's last. Here's the official statement as released to EW:

"After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best we've seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end. We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012."

While disappointing, this isn't as bad as I expected. They'll have a full 12 episodes next year to wrap things up. That's a lot better than many shows that are cancelled immediately after their season-ending cliffhanger airs. :(

Also, much as I've enjoyed Eureka, I'm still irritated by the 4th season retcon. If the writers couldn't come up with something better, maybe it's preferable they bring the show to a close.

I've enjoyed Eureka also but feel it has run its course. It's starting to parody itself, utilize gimicky casting choices, and do some outrageous things without enough follow through. Good characters, good premise, mostly good episodes, and we've likely seen plenty enough. I'll be watching what all of the actors and behind the scenes talent do in the future because of my enjoyment of the show. If they stretched it much further, I might begin to dismiss some of the talent, and I am glad that won't be the case.

Well, that's much better than just pulling the plug NOW, as SyFy often likes to do...

I love Eureka. It's definitely one of my top five favorite shows of all time. Jaime Paglia was an EN World member at one time too. If he's still around, I just want to say thank you for giving my family and I such a wonderful, imaginative and entertaining show to always look forward to watching. Absolutely stellar work! B-)

It sucks, but it's not unexpected. Typically the 5th season is where contract re-negotiations happen (meaning the show will cost more money to make), and typically Syfy simply doesn't bother and cans the show.

Filming for the 5th season ends this month.

If they're not finished filming the last few 5th season episodes, they can always try changing things at the last minute, to bring closure to the series in the final episode.

But it may very well end up looking like a "rush job".

Examples of tv shows which ended up having series finale episodes which felt like last minute "rush jobs" (imho).

- Stargate SG-1
- Stargate Atlantis
- Stargate Universe

Wonder if SyFy's intention is to eventually eliminate all sci-fi themed programming from the channel.

Well, crap. Maybe their intention is to eliminate all interesting programming from the channel.

By the way I'm gonna miss it because it often had some of the best looking women on TV.
