Taming of the PCs

I've done a lot of DMing, but I always had one problem. How do I deal with unruly PCs? I'm not one to ban people from my group, but I want them to know there are consequences for their actions.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would think that applying the consequences one could logically expect from the actions of PCs would be sufficient to cut down on the worst of the behavior.

*edit* assuming you mean incharacter behavior, of course.

The suggestion I have is, do not try to tame them. Let them run all over, let them burn down cities and towns, let bards write songs and tell stories of how this group killed fifty people over a poorly cooked meal. Eventually as the group gets more and more out of hand, have them change their alignment to fit their actions, and send some authorities after them.

(I hope this was what you were asking about?)

I was thinking to have a nice balance between structured storyline and alittle freedom, if possible. You see? It's the balance that's hard.

That AND they're arguing with each other, constantly losing focus and never listen to me when I try to get them on track.

Tell me the truth. Do I have a hopeless group? :(

Have you sat them down and explained to them the kind of game you want to run?
Have you told them you are not having any fun?

If the PCs are bickering among themselves, let them come up against a group of humanoid monsters that react smoothly and with teamwork to the standard rough tactics of the players (which never seemed to need refining before).

Archers that hold their actions until they can see a priority target (Mage or Cleric).
Foes that will retreat around corners, luring lone adventurers into situations where they can be dropped into a 20' pit and dealt with later.
Mages that will hold their fire until the first wave has caused the adventurers to commit their major firepower, and then snap off a Blindness or Grease in order to remove one party member, and then another. Mages who will keep one Fireball back to make the adventurer's camp a holocaust on the second watch.
Monsters that will circle around the party and follow the tracks back to their horses/wagon.. which mysteriously vanish into the night.

Oh, and you can't track the monsters by the sound of their arguments, either. :)

I have and they were focused for about two sessions. They're starting to get alittle crazy again. To be honest, it's really only one person that just seem to cause the chain reaction of disobedience in my group. I've talk to him and he's like a brick wall with ear plugs! I'm honestly thinking that just booting him is the best choice. I just want to know if there could be an alternative.
