Well, got official confirmation on this. This is probably going to tick a bunch of you off. You'll see why.

Subject: Haste and Speed weapons

Skip,

There is a lot of conjecture on message boards regarding weapons of speed
and haste and how they DO or DO NOT stack.

Since the description of the speed ability says that it does not stack with
haste, I take that to mean that if you are hasted, you have 2 choices:
1) Use the extra action granted by haste (for whatever).
2) Use the extra attacks granted by your speed weapons.
This is how I've been handling it as a DM. (Which means "God I hope I'm
right!)

My question is simple. If you are hasted, can you use the speed ability of
your weapons (assume there are two) in any way?

The DMG is correct, the speed property does not stack with haste. When hasted, use the extra attack from the weapon or the extra attack (or partial action) from the haste effect, not both.

I'm runnin' with this. Good argument though. :)

That doesn't answer the question I asked.

Can you attack with a speed weapon and do something else with the extra partial from haste?

You have to be more detailed when you email the sage, because he does not think through what he writes in emails!

Unfortunately, on this board, just because you got an answer from the Sage doesn't mean the debate ends. He has made some mistakes in the past, so his opinion (in some people's eyes) means no more than your opinion or my opinion.

As for this issue...I really haven't looked at it as I haven't had a speed weapon in my campaign, so I'm unbiased and undecided.

See!!

Spikey posted while I was writing this :)

He did answer the question.

When hasted, use the extra attack from the weapon or the extra attack (or partial action) from the haste effect, not both.

Notice the (or partial action) part? How much clearer does this have to be? What part doesn't make sense?

Wow. Thanks for the input Cal.

Okay...now THAT was unnecessarily smug.

I can see Caliban's reasoning...the rule as written(as the Sage interprits it) completely screws up when you have two weapons of Speed. But that should be sufficiently rare that it really shouldn't matter in most games.

No, it wasn't smug. Cal is usually very articulate and informative when he posts a reply. This time, it was just childish.

Someone please explain the issue with two weapons of speed? (I'm too lazy to re-read the old thread).

Hmmmm....if the speed enchantment really is a +4 enchantment, then I'm going to have to disagree with the Sage. I'd allow (in the regular part of the hasted round) for someone to get an extra attack with their weapon of speed, and the in the partial action from the haste I'd allow them to do anything they wanted, including attack again, but I wouldn't allow the speed enchantment to allow another extra attack in the partial round.

I see no problem with this ruling, it seems pretty clear to me. No, it does not anser the question about two weapons of speed.

Caliban, by your response I take you are not happy with the answer from the Sage. Could you please elaborate on that please?
