The Book of Vile Darkness -- bad idea?

Not to the extent I mentioned here, perhaps. Of course, the very fact that the Mafia is a huge player in those kinds of activities in Vegas makes you wonder how "legit" they really are.

And our boy in Singapore was the first to complain about this, because he says that the "perfectly legal" brothels are little better than slavers (at least that's what I got out of it: I don't want to put words in his mouth.)

I'd just like to point out the prostitution is not legal in Clark County, Nevada - which is where Las Vegas is. So if the Mafia's involved in "those kinds of activities" in Vegas, that's hardly surprising...

i suppose my main question here is do we really need rules for prostitution? really? i mean will there be tables you roll on to find availability? how the heck is this going to prove itself useful? some things have no buisiness having rules. i suppose it's all about the style of campaign you want to run, a pimp character would care about the going price for ugly prostitutes as compared to good looking ones.

i will probably buy the book after a quick read through though it will never be used in the campaign i am currently in, as the dm is a really religous person and reading the subject matter of this book would make him uncomfortable as i think it will make alot of people uncomfortable.

There are no rules for prostitution. That's an error. The author: one Monte Cook who occasionally frequents these boards, has already said that is a fallacious marketing blurb written by some catalog troll (well, I'm paraphrasing.) The book contains stats and write-ups of the demon princes, the lords of hell and other big-time nasties. It also contains write-ups of those who serve him, what they do to get power (presumably human sacrifice and the like) and stuff like that. Prostitution is a tangent in this thread, and irrelevant because there are not prostitution rules in the book.

Sorry: I meant Nevada in general.

I have to admit that even I find the idea a little uncomfortable, seeing as so many gamers are acting so squirrelly and delighted to be getting a book that, even in its DMG description has always made me a little squeamish.

Frankly, at the risk of sounding offensive and borderline slanderous, I don't see the big amazing deal about a book that covers demons and archdevils.... hasn't it been done already?

Well, I can say that, but I can also say "not a true statement in the least" as well. I can even say "offensive and borderline slanderous" too.

And he could just as easily say "prove you lost money by my words in court" and "counter suit". Even with the threats of legal action towards gamers, i'm still looking forward to the book.

Gods...

...I wonder how often Monte will have to repeat this...or some of the others who already stated it:

Prostitution won´t be the main focus of this book

Apart from that statement, I don´t have much more detailed information about this book, and I guess so don´t 90% of those who post here, be they pro or contra...and I am surprised how well people can start bashing each other about something they all know so little about. Call me naive, but it seems pretty petty to start discussing a book like it is done in this and the other threads about it before even having had a chance to read into it...much more comparing it to other products already...or throwing names around

If you take into account Monte´s work for 3e until now, I don´t think prostitution, drug dealing or child molestation or any other real-world crime will play a heavy part in this book...I guess (note the word guess, please) it will feature what is in every sword and sorcery novel since Conan, Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser or Kane...evil cultists, their devilish patrons, the way they deal in souls and all the other stuff that makes an evil villain truly EVIL...in the FANTASY sense of evíl. ever wonder what the exact advantages are in selling your soul to a devil...or why people are sacrificed to the name of evil deities? I can only guess...but I bet THAT will be the main thing in this book, complete with stats, feats and prestige classes.

Edit: Joshua...you took the words right out of my mouth... :D

I never thought fellow gamers would get all upset over a book devoted to evil. If the thought of evil makes one squeemish I wonder what kind of campaign they play in. Is it all unicorns and sprites and charisma checks as one sits around the campfire telling fairy tales?

P.S. The Prostitute chart in the 1e DMG has already been used in my 3e game. ;)

Gee arent you an arrogant ray of sunshine. Some a$$hole on this board very rudely insults Monte and he replies in a rather polite manner and you take offense at Monte's statement.

I guess there really are all types out there.
