The Book of Vile Darkness -- bad idea?

The person who insulted Monte must be the type that thinks people who read horror books are in some way sick, that people who listen to violent music must be sick, etc.

As for Evil-Looking covers, you can't beat Planescape's Planes of Conflict...

"Amore Regge Senza Legge"
I love that cover. By the way can anyone tell me what "Amore Regge Senza Legge" means? My Latin isn't so good.

Well, that ends my reading of this thread.

No, I can't leave it at that. Here we are, at a message board for D&D 3E, judging not only a book before it comes out, but the man who wrote it, one of the people who made 3E for us. We are suggesting that he has personality problems because he is writing about evil in fantasy! He is good enough to frequent these boards to get a feel of the communities desires, and when he shows up this time what does he read, but an attack on him. When he defends himself, he is attacked again, this time for defending himself!! I am getting sick of this kind of behavior. My GOD people.

M. Delacroix,

From http://www.dictionary.com

Slander: 2.A false and malicious statement or report about someone.

The other definition, 1., refers to the use of the term in law, and there's been no threats of legal action against gamers, and really.. saying that there -was- any such threat is just plain ridiculous.

The one guy said Monte was disturbed. Presumably Monte doesn't agree, so he responded to the insult and called the first guy's comments "borderline slanderous". I must agree with Monte, since.. calling someone disturbed isn't very nice, especially when you base it on vague recollection of some remark made somewhere.

Anyhow, enough of that. I think the book looks like fun, even if just to read. Huzzah for Monte!

Even if your Latin gets a lot better, you might have some problems; it's Italian. Anyway, it means "Love rules without rules."

Greetings!

Ah, geez...I certainly agree with many who expect any such "mature themes" be discussed and detailed in a tasteful manner. I wouldn't expect anything less from Monte Cook. I've been buying stuff that he has made since he began working in the industry, from his days from long ago while working on Rolemaster at ICE. Monte has always been involved with designing interesting, thought-provoking modules and supplements. I have observed that he has always had the highest personal and professional standards. I should hardly think that Monte would change that now, or any time in the future.:)

Having said that, I'm not sure if I understand all the whining and moaning. If I, or Monte, or whoever, were to write up the following:

(1) Discussions and appropriate tables on prostitutes in the city, how brothels might be organized, what prices they go for, and what kinds of crimes and plots they get involved in, that somehow, wouldn't be useful?

(2) Details on what kind of magical powers evil spell-users can get if they sacrifice victims to certain gods, or demons, at certain times of the year, or in magical places, that somehow wouldn't be useful?

(3) Discussions and details on how cultists and evil minions are organized, with special spells unique to various evil cults, as well as special magic items, and horrific new creatures that these evil minions have available to them. Perhaps detail an evil tower, with torture chambers inside with floorplans, and a magic summoning chamber with a wicked laboratory. Detail how the summoning chamber works, or what kinds of benefits the wicked laboratory provides wizards when they work with it. These kinds of things aren't useful?

(4) The mighty demon princes and arch-devils, statted and detailed. Who isn't interested in these?

(5) New tables and uses for horrific diseases that can devastate whole populations, and new powders, drugs, roots, and oils that different evil cults and orders of wizards have developed over the centuries. In addition to full effects and prices, details on their creation and so on, there would be new spells and magic items. These kinds of things aren't just a little interesting?

(6) New prestige classes that can be used with the hordes of evil minions and cults. New kinds of spell-casters, demon-trained warriors, or hunters of souls, whatever. These, and new feats, especially detailing various wicked skills and powers of that these dark forces specialise in, these wouldn't be interesting, and well-recieved?

I just don't get it, I suppose. I'm just guessing at some of the contents, for example. What's the problem? It seems like to me, there is plenty of interesting things that Monte could include in such a gloriously wicked Book of Vile Darkness!:)

Semper Fidelis,

SHARK

If anything has kept me in the industry this long, it's the level-headedness and warm regard of my fellow gamers. And, of course, their distain for pre-judging material that they haven't yet seen.

Now, now, Monte, you know most of us have a high regard for you (I got the distinct impression you were being ironic here). This goes along with something I posted elsewhere a few days ago about how the person most often given the detailed answer is the one who posts the most incendiary, flame-filled message. I think most of the posts on this thread are thoughtful and respectful. Concentrate on those and forget the ones that are obviously troll bait.

Here's a question for you, Monte, that I'm curious about: have you ever read the Book of Ebon Bindings for Empire of the Petal Throne/Tekumel? If so, did your book find any inspiration (so to speak) in that book, in a general sense? Is your book as darkly themed as BoEB? (OK, thatw as two questions. Sorry...)

A fine theory, but not really the way it normally works. Prostitution is generally the exploitation of desperate women in conditions that are little different from the worst kind of slavery. Pimps completely control the lives of their girls, and take all of their money as well.

Because it's illegal. People who work in illegal professions can't form unions, can't go to court over contract disputes, can't complain to the cops without incriminating themselves, etc, etc, etc.

Notice how gangs selling crack shoot each other over turf? Notice how corporations selling alcohol just buy ad spots on the Super Bowl? Same principle.

Just so that Monte feels better if he reads this - Monte, you kick ass! d20 rocks the house! The DMG is incredibly f'in' cool! Your editing skills are top notch and I love your prestige classes! If I were a woman I'd have your babies! Monte roxxor!

Okay, that's enough insincere fan-spout for one day. Great jobs past and present, Monte, I look forward to your next work.
