The Crux of the Matter

(OOC: Not quite yet ;))

*As Rinaldo is running up the stairs, he sees a beautiful glowing ruby-coloured bead flying up the stairs along with him. So very beautiful it is.*

(OOC: Does he care, or just ignore it?)

Rinaldo stops and shouts. "Dispel the bead!" to anyone who can hear it, hoping Rayne will do something, or his intuition is false.

[SBLOCK=OOC]If Hogarth hears the warning, recognizing Rinaldo voice, he will stands up and look at the stair. If he has chance, he will try to dispel it, not sure why he must do it. Hogarth might not hear it, or might not be quick enough to do it, but that will be [/SBLOCK]

(OOC: They can make out somebody yelling but not the distinct words echoing up towards them. The bead is flying at about the same speed as Rinaldo--it looks like it had a greater initial velocity and that's how it caught up to him, but now it's the same as he is)

OOC: Rinaldo will continue to sprint and conitnue to shout in repetition his warning... at best, it is a delayed blast fireball. At worst, it is a meteor... it need to be dispel.

*Everyone hears Rinaldo shout as he and a pretty glowing bead run up into the room.*

"Lyrue's Mercy! Everyone hit the deck!" Rayne shouts in a commanding voice, as she follows Rinaldo's advice, or perhaps her own common sense, and targets the bead with a Greater Dispel Magic.

*But the Dispel attempt is unsuccessful, and the bead zooms past and explodes on everyone, though not Laynie and Elektra, who are actually on the far side of the room, having overshot the rest.*

(OOC: Hogarth's Dispel Magic is futile. He could, however, quickly cast Resist Energy on someone. I suggest it. Pick someone with lower Reflex saves and no Evasion. Like himself. Or Ashna. They'll need it :]

EDIT--looking at Ashna's HP, she's probably toast on a failed save even with the 20 point version of Resist Energy. Protection from Energy would save her though)

[SBLOCK=OOC]Here something I picked up on the SRD, in the dispel magic spell description, and surprised me:

Targeted Dispel
One object, creature, or spell is the target of the dispel magic spell. You make a dispel check (1d20 + your caster level, maximum +10) against the spell or against each ongoing spell currently in effect on the object or creature. The DC for this dispel check is 11 + the spell’s caster level. If you succeed on a particular check, that spell is dispelled; if you fail, that spell remains in effect.

So the DC to dispel the spell is 27, presuming Sin is 17th level caster. Hogarth, being 7th level caster, would have 1d20+7+10 to try to dispel the spell, which is around 50% of success... but it doens't seem to be the case, as Rayne would probably have dispel the spell... or she has been really unlucky?[/SBLOCK]

(OOC: You read it wrong. They are telling you that the maximum on the bonus is 10, not that there is an extra +10 bonus. So even a level 20 caster only gets 1d20 + 10 on Dispel Magic. That's why Rayne used Greater Dispel Magic. Trust me, it isn't even remotely debatable.)

[SBLOCK=OOC]Oh... maybe you've considered it as a counterspell and not an active spell... anyway, if Rayne didn,t dispel it, Hogarth will ward himself and pray Gundar... it's not good when the cleric fall.[/SBLOCK]
