The Funeral (Stonegood judging) [finished]

As she walks to the House Orien HQ, she contemplates who in Sharn might be in a position to provide a reward for Basher's Body. If she has time after her meetings with her House, she'll head out to try to track down the adventurers in question. By dinner time, though, she'll be ready to head back to the Tower Shard to update the others before heading out again.

ooc: I have something ready for Manzanita, but I'm unsure about what the rest of you is doing. I assume you're waiting for her to find out something about the adventurers.

You however have time to make plans since I'm out of town nex week for two or three days, and will resume posting once I'm back and rested.

OOC: You turned down Stulgar's idea as a party, so he's going with his Sister, who knows better about investigating.

Niccolo - male human swashbuckler

"While Raven asks around in the House, perhaps the rest of us could try to find the adventurers -- if they were an informal looting expedition, surely they must have sold some of their loot to artifact dealers we could seek out."

OOC: I'm not really sure how many "weird stuff scavenged from the Mournlands" shops there are in Sharn, but if there are some, that seems like a good place to ask around. We might be able to get some info on the scout, too. It seems like a generic story about "we heard about Basher and want to find out if anything else was recovered from his company" would be a safe start.

OOC: Gather information +2 (untrained), Diplomacy +6 for me -- not sure if anyone else besides Raven has better.

OOC: Back now!

Niccolo and the rest of the team, except Raven, spend much time looking for the adventurers in what can be called the “looters and finders” circles, from the Cogs to Morgrave. Though there are not that many people risking their lives in the Mourlands or Xen’drik, there are enough to make Niccolo lose the trail. There are simply too many, and nobody seems to have heard of who brought Basher the Thrity-third back.

ooc: You just failed the gather information check.

It takes Raven little time to reach Orien’s enclave in Sharn. It isn’t as important or impressive as other houses’, but being a House centre in a major city is impressive enough.

Raven was looking for the right words to say when she arrived, mentally rehearsing them, but it turns that she doesn’t need to use the speech. She’s immediately brought before Zhorra d’Orien, house Orien’s second in command in Sharn. She (Zhorra) invites Raven into her office, a irregular-shaped niche built in the side of the tower.

”I don’t know how you do it” says Zhorra smiling. She invites Raven to sit down. ”First the cult’s papers, then this thing… certain gnome attending one of our post centers told us that there seems to be a item of much importance to House Cannith, and looks like it’s a crystal of some sort. And you happen to be in the middle of it again. Well done, I must say, it doesn’t matter if it’s luck or talent. Sometimes luck if it’s own talent.”

“Anyway, what do you have to say about it? Can we benefit from it somehow?”

ooc: I’m being purposefully vague on House Orien’s presence or power in Sharn, since they don’t give details of it in any sourcebook I have, and it’s not central to the adventure. This way other DMs can expand on it without clashing with this adventure.

Raven blushes at the compliment. She's still not used to being back in the favor of her house.

"This man, Orerreth, seems trustworthy. He claims to have been involved with making weapons in Cyre. Terrible weapons, like the ones responsible for the Day of Mourning. But he says he was a double agent for Breeland. Says he wrote down some of the secrets of these weapons on a crystle and had it delivered to Basher, the warforged, who was also an agent of Breland. So far, it makes sense. But then it gets tricky."

"Basher is killed. Evidently burried in a shallow grave. Later someone digs him up, and brings his body back to Sharn, where it is laid to rest. But where's the crystal? According to Orerreth, he somehow found out that a certain warforged scout had burried him, and taken the crystal. He says he did this through his contacts at House Cannith. These contacts also supposedly found the adventurers who had brought Basher's body back to Sharn. They read these adventurers' minds, and determined that they knew nothing about the crystal. Orerreth then somehow convinced this scout back in the Mournlands to send him the crystal's location. This was the letter the gnome read, which resulted in the fracas at Basher's funeral."

"The fact is, it just doesn't really add up. Orerreth says he still has contacts in House Cannith, yet he also says he was discovered as a spy in Cyre before its destructions, so it seems likely that House Cannith knows he betrayed them. Also, who is this scout that sends this information to him by mail? How can he be trusted? Perhaps Orerreth is being led astray by his contacts at House Cannith. Perhaps the adventurers who found the body did actually take the crystal."

"So you see, I believe Orerreth that this crystal is out there, and contains some very valuable information. Information that should be kept out of enemy hands. Yet I can't indepenendly track the crystal's location. I have to rely on Orerreth, who could well be an unknowing pawn of other forces."

Raven leans forward. "This could be a coup for House Orien to get this crystal. But we would somehow need to track down this warforged scout, the adventurers, or both. Of course it's possible that neither of these actually exists, and Orerreth is misleading us, probably unintentionally. Do you think House Orien could find out anything more about this mystery?"

Zhorra turns towards the windows and examines the dragonmark on her wrist before speaking again. "You're right: something doesn't add up; that's why you must continue investigating. Find out if that crystal really exist and who may have it, and we'll be ready its out turn to intervene."

"You know we make a point when it comes to our customers' privacy, but this time we can make an exception. The letter was indeed sent by a warforged scout, and it turns that he's not so far from Sharn."

The rest of the party finally give up on their search and decide to rest for a while. It's a busy day, and they relax watching the crowd come and go. It's then when, one by one, feel a presence in their minds. It's nothing like a hard assault, instead it may be compared to a gentle knocking. You insctintively undertsand that someone wants to speak with you, and only have to look around at your companions to see that they feel it too.

OOC: I'm going to start to put this conversation into sblocks. It could make this adventure more interesting if Raven conveys her information to the rest of the party herself.

Raven smiles broadly, and can't stifle a small laugh. "House Orien.... I am fortunate to work here. I would be very pleased to continue this investigation. Perhaps we could track down this scout. But I would know more. I don't see why he would talk to us. Is he also an agent of Breland? Perhaps originally in the same band as Basher? Is House Orien interested in claiming this crystal as its own? Could we make him an offer?"

"There are others, too, who were part of the battle at the chapel who also seem interested. They could help me track down this scout, but might not want to give the crystal to House Orien. "
