People in all sorts of social pastimes will often stick it out even when the joy has gone out of it, usually because it's their group, and separating yourself from such a social structure can be difficult and painful.
This is yet another thing thats been bouncing around my skull lately. I read an article somewhere recently, talking about how 'the athlete dies twice'. A quick google shows its not a new topic/idea.
I think that sometimes, the same thing applies to people who just get too wrapped up in a hobby that they dont fully or even partially control.
For the athlete, the first death of course being retirment from competition or training. It can suck very very hard to lose something that can be your primary 'reason'. Its why you get up, its why you eat the way you do, its why you suffer in the gym, sacrifice, go to bed early, its all consuming and when that goes, either due to injury or age or inability to perform its a blow.
Watching a hobby move on without you isnt quite as painful (in my experience) but if its wrapped up in ones social circle as well, it can suck pretty hard.
