I've had some less than great confusion when I tried to use mystery cults in a setting, and had a player convinced I meant modern abusive religious organizations, not gnostic groups with secret rituals.

Using a euphemism like "secret society" can help avoid that sort of thing.

Using a euphemism like "secret society" can help avoid that sort of thing.

Or just giving the group a name, and referring to it by that. Maybe you can reference something like the Eleusinian Mysteries, as a real-world comparison, and not have to mention the "mystery cults" category name.
