Wow. Somehow I don't think that exchange went the way you thought it would.

I made the mistake of checking out a long thread I hadn't really looked at before - and stumbled on something I think I've only seen mentioned before in other very different contexts.

OMG. The reason they don't seem to be understanding your point is essentially no one cares about that distinction when they play. They barely care about it on here very often. I am worried that you actually care so much. Why!?!?!?!

I mean, move on to something important like Stouts vs. Porters, Yams vs. Sweet Potatoes (I think I actually know that one), or Soggy Cardboard vs NY Style.

I was going to make a snarky comment about porters usually tasting like chocolate and stouts usually tasting like coffee. Then I went and found the judging guidelines for beer tastings (specifically American porter and American stout) and ... that's pretty much exactly right. Yay, I'm a nerd.

I would never have guessed that, and I have tried a huge variety of them. I will have to start paying particular attention - and so will report back. (With IPA and Sours filling the aisles I'm just happy to find a stout or porter I haven't tried; and since a bunch of those are dessert stouts that probably really skews things).
