Oh... anybody else listen to local radio? You ever get that band you really really dislike coming to town and the station plays the crap out of it? I cant wait until that show passes and then the music can stop ruining the air!
Can't stand radio. I've also lost all patience for adds in the middle of shows. Radio isn't even a very good place to hear music you might not have encountered before. It is not only that I just don't see the point of radio any more but I'd rather drive in silence than listen to it on a long drive if I'm unable to play from my music streaming or pod cast app.

I've gone FULL PODCAST.

And I listen to them at, like 83x speed!!!!!!!!!!!

I might not be able to understand what they are saying, but I can not understand so much more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You probably are not familiar with public radio like KCMP Minneapolis and KEXP in Seattle then. No ads, live acts, constant reshuffling new music with classic s in every genre.

I'm the same, though instead of drive in silence, i caterwaul Bohemian Rhapsody, which, while already a long-ish song, can get rather repetitious on a 600 mile trip.

Ah, okay, you got me. My wife listens to The Current, and there are some blocks she'll get me to listen to. But I never think to tune into the radio on my own. At least with The Current, when they are playing music I really like, I'm not getting violently pulled out of it with ads. When we lived in New York, we used to listen to the Fordham University radio station, and my wife used to volunteer answering calls on their pledge drives. Still, it is always hit and miss or wait until the scheduled segments you know you like.

For learning new music, I like podcasts like No Dogs in Space that do deep dives into the history and have associated play lists.

I also like finding fan-curated playlists. For example, I like the Old Gods of Appalachia podcast and that sent me down a deep rabbit hole of Spotify playlists.

I've basically curated my own radio with podcasts and an app that lets me create "drive time," "work day" and other playlists that assemble everything I would want from radio, anyway. And yeah, lots of pulls from the new wave of NPR stations that go hard on playing lots of interesting music.

Los Angeles' KCRW is probably the exemplar of this form. Morning Becomes Eclectic is an amazing show and a great preview of the amazing soundtracks you'll hear on the best TV shows and movies in 18 months. (Everyone in Hollywood appears to listen to Morning Become Eclectic each weekday.)
