No. That's completely unnecessary. You can keep it vague-- and therefore adaptable-- in spell descriptions etc.

I do believe this is the answer. There's at least enough mention that an abstraction of the cosmology should get a mention in the PHB.

Also, just personal preference, but D&D does not need a codified cosmology common to all games. Eberron shows that setting specific cosmology is better.
True, it's preference, ut as aomeone who started during the 3E era it was really fun to discover the old AD&D cosmic stuff later, much more my style than the whole.botique cosmology tuff that was in vogue at that time.
 



They've sort of described somewhere that Feywild is in between the Positive Energy Plane and Material Plane, while Shadowfell as being between the Negative Energy Plane and the Material Plane.
