So why not brief overview of gods in the PHB?

Because certain spells, sub classes and feats refer to them, so it helps when a player sees the Shadow Touched feat they can see "What's a shadowfell ?"

No. That's completely unnecessary. You can keep it vague-- and therefore adaptable-- in spell descriptions etc.

I do believe this is the answer. There's at least enough mention that an abstraction of the cosmology should get a mention in the PHB.

I honestly don't think they really needed to bring up the Planer structure in the PHB, but they did and it doesn't bother me.

True, it's preference, ut as aomeone who started during the 3E era it was really fun to discover the old AD&D cosmic stuff later, much more my style than the whole.botique cosmology tuff that was in vogue at that time.

You could...but they haven't, the PHB Spells, Species and Class stuff reference the cosmology, more than they do the gods.

They've sort of described somewhere that Feywild is in between the Positive Energy Plane and Material Plane, while Shadowfell as being between the Negative Energy Plane and the Material Plane.
