The Warlock out of alignment

What I would do

This is a role playing game and turn it into a role playing experience. As a CE warlock, determine where he got his powers from. If he changed Alignment, have him re-examine if he wants those powers from that dark place. Most good people I think would say no. Then have him adventure to find a new source for his powers. If he used his powers while he was finding this new source, I might have him do damage to himself in addition to the foe. Or if the source that he got his powers from tries to stop him, his minions would be immune to the worlock. It is a game that is only limited by imagination, not rules.

Okay so what I'm getting is:

By the RAW nothing happens as no penalty is specified, not even a limit on advancing. Unlike, say, the hexblade who is the most screwed of any class that had an alignment restriction since they can't even atone.

This is probably an error since it is unique among alignment restriced classes therefore house rules/ Rping/ waiting for errata are suggested.

What does this mean then:

This is found on page 7 of the Complete Arcane, under Warlock...

It means that warlocks are expected to have a starting alignment that is either chaotic or evil. Should the character have a change of heart or unfortunate mishap with a magic item, there is nothing to say that their abilities disappear or cannot be improved. I don't find the alignment requirement to be necessary anyway, as it is entirely likely that a TN (or whatever) individual simply inherited his powers from his progenitors.

Important to note, however, that Warlock powers arn't necessarily derived from a fiendish source (yeah, I know, despite the bulk of the powers' flavor). The class description makes mention of fey powers or similar being a source. In essence it doesn't have to be -evil- necessarily, but it does pretty much need to be capricious and dangerous.

A chaotic good warlock could take Vow of Poverty, but would lose the ability to wear Light Armor and the use of any magic items that a 12th+ lvl Warlock could make. So its possible, but likely sub-optimal.

Retain his powers but lose the ability to advance as a Warlock?

Sounds like that's probably it. You need to satisfy all the class requirements to take any level in a class. But, any further disadvantages would need to be spelled out in the class description.

Dunno where you get that from. Regular classes don't have a general "what you need to take a level in this class" rule, and even PrC's only enforce their restrictions for the first level.

Unless, of course, you use that wacky rule from CW that means a 10th level dragon disciple stops being a dragon disciple...

Well, I must admit that I'm surprised to discover that the Prestige Class rules say one "must meet Requirements before they can take their first level of a prestige class" more than once. If it's actually intended that requirements don't apply anymore once the first level is taken, that's pretty wacky.
