The party proceeds.

---

The slope grows more steep. In the far distance (farther than an arrow's flight), you can see a faint light, much like the gloaming at the end of the day.

You see the terrain curving downward into a deep, irregular depression in the distance. A jagged crevasse slices through the middle of the valley. A few boulder-sized balls of paper rest on the papier mache ground.

But that's not the oddest thing...

You can see several giant rats made from folded paper darting about the valley. One stands atop a paper-ball boulder, sniffing the air in your party's direction, attracted by your lights.

Two other rats gnaw a hole into the ground, ripping out large shreds of paper. Then, they fold the pieces into small origami rats, tossing the 'newborns' onto a huge, swarming pile of the creatures.

...I suppose there's a metaphor to get here... sighs Hadarai looking around. ...and what would my blade represent when it slices through one of these things? Oh well, let's free the old man of this curse, or what it is, guys! and in saying so, he indicates the rat on top of the ball to Emral with his sword, a pack of small, newborn rats to Drivan, and gestures to Vaunea and Finnian to take care with him of the other rats on the ground.

ooc:well... it's not like I had a clear idea of the disposition of rats, but I tried to make a mental image...

Emral giggles as he sees all the paper-creatures. See, I'm a fire-wielding mage, with fire powers and such. he explains conspiratorially to anyone listening as he notes the target pointed to by Hadarai. So wait, you want me to incinerated the ball, or the pile of creatures? Or... huh, come to think of it, would this whole place catch on fire? In fact, now that I think about it, maybe the paper is a metaphor for everything this fellow knows. That could be why he's gone nuts. I'm not sure fire powers would be wise, but maybe... Drivan, what are your thoughts?

Emral ponders the effect his magics might have on the man's sanity if the "paper world" inside his head were incinerated. And what these creatures are.
[sblock=Arcana Check(s?)] 1d20+9=28, 1d20+9=14
So the first one comes first. I didn't know if you'd want a second roll or if there should be only the first roll and see what I learn from all of it. Anyhoo, saving time I did two, use the second if you need it, etc. :D[/sblock]

Drivan, in response to Emral's question, says "I believe we should stick with non-fire related spells. Better safe than sorry, right? And just an idea but perhaps we should try speaking with these mad rats? If this is anything like what it seems reasoning may be possible."

[sblock=Arcana Check]1d20+10 → [4,10] = (14) Hopefully Emral is more successful...[/sblock]

Well, if we aren't using flames... I'm in big trouble! I'm going to lure that one of the rock over here, so we can gang up on it before the other two get to us. If it's friendly, we have a chance at diplomacy; if not, tactics are on our side!

With that, Emral creates motes of light in front of the rat on the boulder. Little will o' wisps that bob and dancing, and if the rat is inclined, move towards the party. Emral sends a whisper message only the rat can hear. Over here, friend, by the lights. Follow the lightsssss...

We can't use fire in here! We'll all go up if this paper catches on fire.

Besides, the old man was mumbling something about rats tearing at memories or something. All this stuff written down on paper, that must be what the old man was talking about, right? He's a wizard, and well, don't you wizard types all read and stuff? This must be... all the stuff he knows?

[sblock=Here's your problem...]

Er...

No.

Check the description.

You're distant from the rats: outside of bowshot range (over a couple of hundred yards). None of your powers can reach, unless you close the distance.

Also, you're visible. Under your current circumstances, surprise is out. You have two active light sources at a high elevation with no cover in a completely dark environment. (Imagine you're standing in the middle of an open field at midnight, waving a torch.) The rat on the rock is facing your direction and most likely sees you.

To achieve surprise, you'd have to dowse your lights and approach in a stealthy manner.[/sblock]

[sblock=First Arcana Check]I'm assuming that Drivan's Arcana check is intended to "assist other", providing a +2 bonus to Emral's first check.

Both wizards come to the following conclusion...
  • The terrain is flammable.
  • Instantaneous fire spells will probably not ignite the terrain. (Say, 1 in 6.)
  • Longer duration fire spells will definitely start a blaze.

As regards the locale, this is probably some psychic construct. Damage to the terrain may have some adverse effect on the man's psychic well-being.[/sblock]

[sblock=Second Arcana Check]Note: Arcana is not the only skill you use to identify monsters.

You have never seen or heard of any sort of creature.

However, because you haven't heard of them, a captured specimen may have value to a scholar--perhaps several hundred or a thousand gold pieces of value...[/sblock]

Emral douses his lights, whispering to the others. Ok, this place is obviously some sort of ...psychic construct or representation of the wizard's mind. Finnian is quite correct, in that longer-lasting fire magics would light this place up like a cat on mardi graz. Regular fire magic, like my flame bursts, would maybe do it, but I don't want to take chances. Unless I can switch to my Sleep spell, I'll be using Magic Missiles for now... unless of course we're in a tight spot.
If we're going to do this, we need to get closer to those rats. We could actually make good money if we capture some alive, as specimens. I've never seen anything like this; unless they're some sort of... I don't know, demon or devil-creature. Hmm...

[sblock=Religion check]1d20+9+2=23 I added the +2 this time, due to my Daunton Background of Monster Knowledge bonus. Emral spent a lot of time reading about monsters, etc., anyway, and now he's thinking of spirit creatures or outsiders that would want to reproduce inside someone's mind. Arcana not being the only monster-knowledge skill to use.[/sblock]
