[UPDATED] WotC To Close Forums - Including D&D and M:tG (aka "Welcome New Forum Members to EN World!

WotC has announced that it will be closing its forums, which they refer to as a "former foundation of our community". The forums will close on October 29th. Of course, WotC's forum members are welcome here at EN World (although the expectations are a little different, so please do check the rules if you sign up!) The forums have been around for nearly two decades, in various incarnations, but WotC cites the rise of social media platforms as the reason for the closure.

Here's the announcement in full.

Choosing to retire a former foundation of our community was not an easy decision, but we feel that we must adjust our communications structure to reflect where conversations about Wizards of the Coast games are taking place.

Social media has changed significantly over the last ten years, and discussions about games aren't exclusive to company-hosted forums. The majority of community conversation takes place on third-party websites (such as Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and many other fantastic community-run websites), and it is up to us to evolve alongside our players.

We encourage past and current users to retrieve any information you want to retain from the Community Forums for both Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. The shutdown will occur on October 29, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. PT. We want to provide enough time for our forum members to move their content, and we recognize that given our forum's vibrant user base and extensive history, this may take time. Any information still on the forums on the cut-off date will be deleted.

Thank you to all of our past and current forum users. You helped build our community into what it is now, and we look forward to continuing to interact with you on our many active social platforms.

WotC's Trevor Kidd had a little more to add.

"I could hop onto all the forums having this discussion or I can say it here and let it disseminate. I'm choosing the former. Moving away from running our own forums doesn't mean we think longer conversations or fan sites/forums aren't good or necessary. They are both good & necessary. From what I'm seeing, they flourish and you enjoy them more when they are run/managed by fans.

DnD & RPGs in general are all about story telling & talking with friends. It makes sense that we want to share those stories. So, it's vital that we have places to share those experiences & stories, like forums & fansites. But it's not vital that #dnd run those.

Closing our forums does not in any way lessen our interactions. We'll still be talking & lurking in your social media & fan sites. And the idea that forums are going away because dnd &/or magic are doing poorly - that's ludicrous! :p Both are doing very, very well.

We'll still be talking with you here, and elsewhere. Enjoy your new forum homes and don't forget to migrate your treasured content!

On the topic of losing forum content - it's tough, I agree. Once we knew we were going to close the forums, we also knew we weren't going to maintain the community site indefinitely, so we opted to pull the band-aid off quickly rather than let it linger."

Welcome to new members!

We've been here over 15 years now, and there is tons of useful content here and lots of great resources which you're welcome to explore. These include:

My concern isn't over the 900-lbs gorilla that gets it's own sub-forum on every RPG webpage. It's more how indie companies are avoiding forums now and how this will motivate them to care even less.

There's about three game systems that I'd like to chat about in a single place as compared to spread out about all over "social" media where people seem more focused on posting up "inspiring" pics than actual discussion.

At least Evil Hat has adopted a Yahoo forum as their haunting grounds.

I am thinking of moving over the 5e guides.

That would be awesome. I did an emergency download of each guide (1st page only), but they'd need to be cleaned up/stripped of WotC assets. Several of them have already been duplicated on Google Docs, too, which is nice.

And Here I am back again.

I retire for a few months, move to nowhere land, ignore RPG life for the most part...and WotC decides to close the forums (not that I've actually posted on their forums for...I think it's been years now). I wonder what other changes are going to happen!

Still, maybe this is the boot I need to occasionally drop in more!

As for saving the forums...I know of a way it used to be done. I think I may actually have an archive of the forums from several years ago (but not the most recent forums, and to top it off the old archive I have is probably still in a box somewhere though...haven't unpacked everything [if I ever will...been six months almost already] from my move). I think it would either take a LOT of work though, or a direct access to the server with the information stored on it.

It looks like there's some 5e topics going on here nicely.

If you guys are going to try to save all of it somewhere I wish you the best of luck!

This is pretty sad news. Personally, I do not really use the other social media avenues they reference in their announcement. Further, I do not think those venues provide the breadth and depth of discussion that forums so.

This will result in the destruction of a tremendous amount of game related content. This includes CharOp handbooks, fan created settings, indexes and aggregates of content on other sites and on Wizards own site, art work, etc. The forums were like a massive searchable library of game related content and they are not just closing the collection -- they are shutting down all access to it. This seems like a major loss to me.

It also simply turns off one piece of the D&D community. There are others (including this one) but I can not see it as anything but a negative. And I don't think Twitter or Reddit are comparable substitutes.

Actually, Kevin is pretty active on the Palladium forums.

This is true. I'm just theorising, but it seems that smaller publishers are more open to communicating with their fans. Guys like The Design Mechanism, Moon Design Publications, Mongoose, and Far Future Entertainment, for example.

I haven't been to WotC forums in over a year, my last foray to it was shortly before GenCon 2014 and it was toxic…

I much prefer using ENworld, folks are nicer and news are on time and the moderators are excellent. So kudus and keep up the good work!

Already more or less jumped ship 2.5 years ago. There are a few character guides worth saving over there though for 5E and 4E.

Social Media and better websites have evolved into a better savings for a company rather than forums. Social Media is new and it will continue to be the trend so long as it is mostly free. Companies don't have to pay/pick moderators and run a server, they just post/ignore what they want.

Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins have made extensive use of twitter for example and I have found that more intriguing than sifting through the WoTC forums. For specific and focused discussions places like this exist who can ban folks that are acting out of line without the backlash against them like a company can have.

There might be other exceptions out there, but the only one I can think of is Mongoose, and even they are a bit slow to respond, but they do. Beyond that, I agree with this statement, and it makes sense.

You need to get out more. Paizo, Pinnacle Entertainment Group, Green Ronin, and Kobold Press are all regularly & frequently active in their forums. From what I recall Crafty Games, SJ Games and Fantasy Flight Games do so as well but I visit them less frequently so things may have changed.
