[Very Much Alive/Old Thread] Sir Ian McKellen...

...was just on the Craig Kilborn show doing a Shakespearian reading of how to change a flat tire. I sure hope he gets an Oscar in the next three years at some point. He's a real good sport on this tour for FotR... :)

I think Sir McKellen knows already that he is going to fall into the same trap that Alec Guiness fell into: Despite many wonderful film roles that he has been in previously, he is going to be known for the rest of his life as Gandalf. However, he seems to be quite willing, and a very good sport. Only time will tell if he gets as bitter as poor Sir Guiness used to be about it. (G.R.H.S.)

No, no, no. He won't be remembered solely as Gandalf for the rest of his life, her's going to be that Gandalf/Magneto guy for the rest of his life.

Sir Ian McKellen is a wonderful actor, as was demonstrated by his performance as Gandalf in LotR. I do think his characterization will stand out in many people's minds when his name is brought up, much in the same fashion that Julia Roberts immediately conjures "Pretty Woman" correlations.

It's interesting that the fear in Hollywood is that if any gay male actor comes out of the closet, his career will die. But since McKellen came out, his movie career has taken off. First "Apt Pupil," then "Gods and Monsters," then "X-men" and now "Lord of the Rings." I'm glad things have worked out for him, because he's obviously a talented actor.

Not that, ist's a bad thing.
It's better then being known as the guy that super glued himself in that american pie movie.

And now that the last one is about to premiere, we can see just how it will turn out... I don't think he has any worries. He is in quite a lot of makeup and costume for the wizard role. He looks different without the flowing, dirty-white beard. Just like he looks different when not wearing the magneto costume.

And he did very well in "And the Band Played On..."

If they had just bit the bullet and named him the new Dumbledore aftet the sad death of Richard Harris, Sir Ian would go down in history as having completed the Geek Trifecta--Gandalf, Magneto, Dumbledore.
