what alignment is this?

I'd also go with LE. Some of my most social characters have been evil of some sort, I think too many players confuse evil with anti-social because of why they pick evil characters in the first place (I can kill everyone and it's okay...)

Safely assuming that real-world morality and DnD morality are very very different things, what would people designate as the typical alignment, or alignment breakdown, of your standard infantry soldier? I'm thinking of making one for an Iron Kingdoms campaign and, it seems to me, he's going to be pretty flexible when it comes to killing. He's been asked to kill others for no other reason than nationality and, in the case of his CO's, nationalism (skirmish war with a neighbor).

I think he could be any alignment except probably not "good".

I'd say Lawful Neutral if I had to pick.

In the end, however, it's up to your DM coz everybody has a different opinion and your DM is the "final arbiter" as they say.

I'd say either LE or NE. Here's my definitons of alignment, which are the real crux of the argument.

Good and Evil are defined by selflessness or selfishness. If he killed only to smite the wicked, or so stop injustice, or to save puppies and Christmas, that would be Good. Especially if he did so at great risk to himself. If he killed when he needed to, but neither relished or was disgusted by the act, that would be morally neutral. If he kills for pleasure, or relishes combat regardless of the circumstances of those he's battling, that's evil.

Law and Chaos I define by Order or Freedom. If he values order and organization over personal freedoms, that's LAwful. If he desired personal freedom above all other concerns, chaotic. If he's interested in both these goals depending on the circumstances, or neither, then neutral.

The standard infantry soldier is basically a conscript, pulling army duty because it is required of him, and he doesnt' get much choice in the matter. As such, the standard infantryman is the same as the populace in general. By the book, for humans, that makes him neutral.

I find it interesting how many people have said "if he follows a personal code, he's Lawful." I'm playing a character probably best described as Evil at the moment, and she's very chaotic. She has a passionately followed code, based around freedom for all. She hates authority, and will mistrust leaders on principle. Very chaotic. However, having read the posts here, I feel compelled to hijack the thread.

My character has been defined by my GM as Evil. That said, I question... She is a murderer, a thief, and a terrorist. She's also a devoted mother, a loving wife, and believes in liberty and equality for all. How can those work together? I'll explain.
The gameworld is at war. My character is a terrorist working against a conquering dictator. She started out Chaotic Neautral, but the horrors of war have dragged her down. She slits the throats of unconscious foes, instead of taking prisoners. She finds excuses for herself to take the safest route through interaction with foes- dead men don't fight back, dead men don't report back. She is a ruthless killer when on the battlefield, but she feels terrible about what she's done after the fact... Most of the time. When her family is threatened, she enjoys killing the threats- punnishing those who'd do her loves harm. She's scared herself before with her bloodlust in these instances, and takes pains to avoid them at all costs.
To top that off, she's dedicated herself to the destruction of fiends and those humans who could be mistaken for them. She finds humans capable of atrocities- destruction of sould, murder of children- to be worthy of the hell they've earned, and desires to send them to judgement.

I think she's evil, but close to neutral. Outside of a war, she wouldn't have any need to be evil, but at the moment, she's going to hell. What do you think?

By the way.. My vote for the thread's character is Neutral Evil, given the information we have.

- Kemrain the Evil.

Neutral.

He's not overly selfish or altruistic, but a bit of both.

He's not overly free-form, and has a loose code of conduct but isn't otherwise terribly devoted to it, or self-discipline in general.

He cares about some things - things that are important to him, personally. His brother. His immediate friends. But doesn't give two shakes about things beyond that. Other people can take care of themselves.

Any more detail to this guy? Where's he from? Why is he the way he is? What are the details of his code (unspoken doesn't cut it)? He's seemingly emotionless - why? More importantly, why the act? If he really -was- emotionless, he wouldn't care about his brother, his friends, or have a code of conduct. He's very secretive - why? He seems to live for combat and death - how does this mesh with the idea of him being seemingly emotionless?

He was a prince of a small kingdom but war destroyed it an his parents died he fled to a large city and learned to fend for himself in the deadly allies and filthy streets. He tries to maintain that he doesn't care about anything and that nothing effects him so that his enemies won't find out and use the knowlige that put his friends at risk. He lives for combat and death because during his brutal life he's found that fighting seems to be everything and emotions simply get the way.
PS: he was a his father's squire at the castle and a street fighter that went assassin (as job not class) in the city later he left the town and acted as a mercenary for a while.
