These polls from wizards are a little tricky in that the voters might be voting based on concept or based on mechanical implementation

example for these ‘favorite races’ some of these have cool concepts that I love love love but the 5e implementation feels so lackluster that I’d never actually want to play it as written in 5e.

Yeah, definitely. I think it would be far more useful for them if they had separate 'I like the concept' and 'I like the execution.'

Yup and we can see that a bit I think in this list in that if you compare it to "actually played" races it's a total nonsense, with Halfings and Changelings being far less played than they are popular for example.
 



Fair, but Fairy especially I would think someone would have tossed a vote at.

I mean Centaur has one. I've legit never seen a person, in my whole life, roll up a Centaur. :D
I made one in 1e, had trouble going into dungeons and other places the human sized PCs could, ditched it and rolled up something else.
