What Music Was Gary Gygax In To?

What music was Gygax, Arneson, and the others in to? What was the 'sound track' of the 'Grand Auld Gayme' during that seminal period in the 1970s?

The game feels like Hard Rock but Country was very popular in that time period too. From these fora I found an interview...

...where Gygax speaks of his musical interests when he was younger, "classical, blues, Spanish, and modern jazz." I don't know, that sounds like something I would tell an interview so I don't sound like a total rube.

Was Dave Arneson in to Black Sabbath? Blue Oyster Cult? Was Kuntz a Led Zeppelin fan? Maybe Gary was all about Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton? Does anybody have a clue?

It seems like you have an answer from Gygax himself, and no good reason to doubt his word. He and his friends were nerdy types, and when he came of age those folks were mostly listening to jazz and folk. Country and rock were lowbrow music.

But he doesn’t seem to have been that into music.

Well, I for one would like to know what his favorite laundry detergent was...

Joking aside, I found this for you:
"I listen mostly to classical, Spanish guitar, jazz, and some blues too. Of composers, I am drawn to Mozart and Beethoven.Segovia surely was master of the guitar, and the "modern" jazz musicians aremy favorites--Parker, Davis, Gillespie, Hinton, Rich, Anita O'Day, BillieHolliday, Stan Kenton--all that lot. As to blues, well all the 1940s and50s performers are fine by me, from Joe Turner and BB King to Leadbelly andBig Momma Thornton."

I think it was Metalheads who picked up on D&D, not D&D's original creators being Metalheads. The only direct Metal influence on early D&D was Moorcock.

I think, as you post in your topic, that he was into Jazz. Blues. That type of music.

I think he actually really liked music as well. No one really asks about what happened to the record collection though, I suppose Luke or Ernie knew what happened to it though.
