What RPG books/manuals do you really regret buying?

Quite a few books in my collection I have regrets over were gifts. Still, if I could do it all over again, I'd not buy CCI (I'd wait patiently for the revised version) or Denizens of Dread 3.0.

And I'd definitely wait until Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary was at a discount.

Demiurge out.

Yeah, that book had so much promise. As a big Elric fan, I offered to help Chaosium out on the mechanics side of things, but they did not take me up on that...

As another has noted, my opinion of Chaosium, especially their business sense, has lowered. Has Green Ronin offered to do a limited license or anything for Elric? They're basically sitting on the license so maybe a Mythic Vistas under license from Chaosium could be done? Ask them with sugar on top!

They dropped the ball real hard with their d20 products. I would have loved to see the dreamlands as a d20 or dual stat book. Or even just a d20 cthulhu monster book. Cool things that could have been.

E-mail 'em and tell 'em about wanting to see a dual statted Monster book. I know that htey're coming out with a new version of their Mythos Monsters soon.

Victoriana: so wretched...

Wow, I'd utterly blanked that one from my mind. I sold it to an acquaintence at price about two weeks after purchasing it. Man, what a regrettable book, indeed... :(

  • Man, I've seen this on several people's list. I'm still using it for one of my characters and one of my players has used it a few times.

    [*]Sheoloth - WORST. NPCS. EVAR.

The fact that Mongoose never updated the NPCs as a free download for those who bought this "3.5" book is what bothers me.

I agree with you here. I just wish they'd finish updating the rest of the material so that I could get rid of it.

d20 Silver Age Sentinels, the fancy color hardback edition. I waited and salivated for that thing for months and when I got it...it just wasn't what I was looking for either in a d20 game or a superhero game. I love the fluff material for it and the discussion of comics; the essays on being a hero in Shield of Justice are excellent. But I was overall just totally disappointed even before my first reading was complete. It's probably going away in the next round of eBay sales.

I'm afraid I'd have to say the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. Notwithstanding the fact that I've been rather blah about the "F'n Realms" recently, as someone called them, virtually all of the non-plot stuff in the book has had to be revised in some form or other, making the book as a whole not really useful to me because the setting becomes a patchwork of information and mechanics from other books.

Which admittedly is rather like the Realms are constructed anyway, if I remember Ed Greenwood correctly.

Just about everything for 3.0/3.5 with the exception of some modules, and Creature Collection I, and Toolbox by AEG(I think)

Anything Darksun, Planescape & Spelljammer from 2nd edition.

The whole Players Option line in 2nd edition(Skills and Powers etc)

I'll agree with others on Dragonlords of Melnibone - picked it up, tried to like it... set it aside.

The original Psionics Handbook was a waste - picked it up, tried to get 'into it', set it aside. I've had a bad taste for Psionics in D&D ever since.

Nothing else comes to mind right off, though...

EDIT: Oh, right. I never did 'get' 7th Sea. Got it, tried to get into it a few times... set it aside and eventually sold it off.

*is completely puzzled why ANYONE would consider BoIM a waste* Maybe not extremely useful all the way, but there was a lot there different classes could use.

Joe,

My gripe with BoED is that it tried TOO hard to copy BoVD and not just say "Hey look, we are good guys, we might be a little straight edged but we are more good than just "good" guys."

That, ravages made 0 sense to me, plus a holy assassin doesn't work for me. (Yes I've seen other ways to work it, like in Fraility but come on...)
