I'm not worried about the hit points. It's the Concentration checks and Constitution saves you need to worry about.
But how much is your con score going to affect this unless you put a ton into it?

This is a legit argument for con save proficiency (and one that could be counterargued for Dexterity as well), but it is a ton of resources to invest enough to change your save bonus significantly without proficiency.

It's the Concentration checks and Constitution saves you need to worry about.
IME Concentration checks are nearly always DC 10 since the caster has to take 22 points of damage even for DC 11.

Now, only Sorcerers have CON save proficiency (and EK as Fighters of course), so I often see casters take either Resilient for CON or War Caster.

I've also often seen DMs house-rule that instead of CON save, you make a spellcasting check instead for a Concentration check.

While poison saves are fairly common, getting resistance and/or advantage is pretty easy IME as well.

So, I see players valuing it more for hit points than anything else, even though the hit points have the least impact commonly.

(To be clear, I am not saying you are wrong at all! I'm just sharing my own experiences...)

DC 10 doesn't sound like a lot until you're a Paladin with a +2 on the check, and you decided to actually cast Shield of Faith, instead of just smiting everything in sight. First attack hits me and the spell fell off. : (

Rotten luck, the odds were in your favor, after all.

I guess, but a 35% chance of failure is still pretty big, IMO. Either way, I decided to give my casters as much Constitution as possible from that moment on, at least until I could somehow get Con save proficiency or Warcaster.

Oh, it isn't minor, I know that.

But getting that CON save or War Caster is pretty common for most casters, as I said, so it is hardly surprising you did the same.

FWIW, my casters focus on instantaneous or non-concentration spells. :)

There's just some really nice spells with Concentration requirements!
Agreed! It just depends on the build.

But IMO way too many spells have concentration that shouldn't. In our MOD, we removed I think about 65% of the concentration from spells that had it.

Another thing we do is is a spell has concentration but allows the target a save each round:

1. While you maintain concentration, the target does not get to make a save to end the effect.
2. If you drop or lose concentration, the target can make saves normally. The spell lasts until they make the save.

For example. think about hold person.

This makes concentration actually worth having. I, personally, hate the "save each round" mechanic...
