WotC_Rodney...Chris Perkins...a black dragon...a playtest

Eh, it's not like I'm that worried though. Any game they come up with would be better than one I came up with. :)

Been there; done that. I agree with you completely. I remember my attempts in this direction. Shudder! :heh:

A single CR 4 is not a solo fight for 7 4th level characters in 3e. Depending on the monster a group like that could handle a CR 7 or 8, even some CR 9s, albeit with casualties.
I think any conclusion that a large black dragon is the equivalent of CR 4 in the new rules is more than a little flawed.

A CR in 4e means 5 pc's of the CR level. So a 'normal' CR4 would be 5 level 4 pc's. Adding in two more pc's can, hypthetically bring the CR upto CR5.

ANd nobody is 'concluding' anything here; I was respoding to someone who was quoting a CR9 encounter.

There is no CR in 4th ed...

The "power curve" is supposed to be flatter, ie lower level charecters tougher, so you may have more freedom to throw assorted dragons at your players.

I made the post last night.

Fact of the matter is, the core mechanics for 4th Edition have been done a long time. That doesn't mean that individual abilities are immune to scrutiny, though. I feel sure that the designers of 3E were making changes to things like feats and spells all the way up to launch as well, and we can see that even then there were some issues that got through.

That's kind of the concern. ;) I think we're all hoping for a minimum of "broken" skills/abilities in the initial 4e release. I think we all heard the horror story about how the 3e playtesters only realized that the 3.0 druid animal companion was horribly broken AFTER the PHB went to the printers... it'd be nice if the core class abilities in 4e didn't feel that rushed.

I am surprised that 10+ rounds of combat is really long. From what was said about the D&D combat system I had the impression that combats were supposed to last longer (combat rounds) than 3E games. And 10 rounds doesn't look that long to me.

And I agree with the concern about high level testing. Is anyone of the playtesters playing a epic game? Or at least a high level paragon one?
10 rounds is longer than all but one combat I've been involved in since 3e came out; one other combat went longer, but I wasn't present for that session.

10 rounds is long, from what I've seen of 3e!

While my group fought for our lives against giant beetles in a lichen-infested pit, the other group was riding down through the mines on a mine cart. There was about a 20-minute span of the game where the tiefling warlock, the human fighter, and the dragonborn warlord were careening through the tunnels, dodging giant bats and nearly getting themselves killed.

That sounds cool Fantastic! :)

I wonder if 4e has rules for chase scenes in railcars against flying creatures? :p I am sure some splatbook or other third-party 3.x book has it.

I don't know how well the SC 2.0 chase rules work in play, but they LOOK fantastic...
