+X Items - Why so bad for the game?

In my both my friend's campaign we use an alternate rule involving DR to be overcome by appropriate +X weapons.

We found the idea here: Damage Reduction Redux

It seems to work rather well as it ups the usefulness of +X weapons and mitigates the golf bag effect.

My suggestion would to bring back the 3.0 version of the DR x/Magic. You replace magic with +1 or +2 or +3 or +4 or +5. Now they need a weapon of a give plus to bypass the DR. You just need to pull out you 3.0 MM or earlier version and use the listed magical plus needed.

I seen it as very common for a PC to be walking around with a sword +1, holy, keen, fire, ghost touch weapon, at least in the games I play in.

i'm just going to reply quickly to this cause i dont have the time to say it all right not but. it's not that he needs it but it's the magic gear that allows a warrior to get on equal grounds with a mage or priest.

Which I think only makes sense if you think you're in competition with your fellow party members. You shouldn't be. Your competition is the things you encounter.

it's not a compationtion you twit it's about remaining usefull when a wizerd rolls in casting fireballs and cone of cold a but a warrior still has his long sword and chain mail. seems a little one sided and pretty useless. but give him a some strenght amulets and the ability to make x2 the actions or blink around the battle field stabing stuff. he suddenly as meaning again.

~ less of the name calling ("you twit") if you want to continue posting in this thread. Thanks: Plane Sailing ENworld admin ~

I don't think +X Items are bad for the game. I DO think the fact the game balance assumes the use of +X Items is bad for the game.

A fighter shouldn't have to rely on having a +X weapon to be able to hit the level-appropriate opponent, nor should he have to rely on having a +X armor to keep most of the attacks of the level-appropriate opponent from hitting him.

Here I disagree.

Magic items are tools invented by the human mind for the betterment of human life.

If a fighter finds that he is weaker in the absence of these tools then he should absolutely seek them.

Just as human beings rely on guns and not on their natural weapons when hunting.

What would you say to a person who said that human beings should not have to rely on tools such as guns etc. to be able to survive level appropriate challenges, i.e. lions?

Would you say that reality is bad becaus it assumes the need for tools and science for the survival of human beings instead of fangs and claws?

I think you missed his point. He didn't say not to use them, he said you shouldn't have to rely on them.

In other words, they should be bonuses. A +X item should be pure icing on the cake, not necessary and already factored into CR appropriate ACs.

i already posted why old powerful creatures should not be effected by the common weapon. i don't care how hard core of a fighter you are your plain long sword shouldn't hurt a lava monster or an ancient dragon.
