+X Items - Why so bad for the game?

If you want a named sword, the solution is to name it yourself not to complain that +1 swords are not interesting.

+1 swords exist for purely mechanical reasons having nothing to do with RP.

If RP is your concern, naming your sword is the solution. Or perhaps unique weapons and armor which are already named and have a backstory.

As a player, something I've been trying to do dating back to the waning days of 2Ed is naming all of my masterwork gear. It personalizes everything...makes it a part if the PC.

Then, when I save up he dough, I have my named weapon.

very true. when a new character gets a named weapon its really cool if its from a campaign set in the past that a former character used

Rakusia -
I concur to a point. I think it's awesome when a player takes the time to craft a PC persona and then go about crafting the legend around his/her life. The problem I find is once a player finds a +1 sword, instead of naming it and crafting a legend, he/she starts looking for the next big thing, i.e. the +2 sword.

I'm not sure why but it seems that players are less interested in creating something with a DM, than being spoon fed something they can regurgitate back at a later date. The last time I played a character of any note was back in 1e in 1986-1988. I've DM'ed pretty much ever since, but I can still tell you stories about that character, his intricacies, special gear and companions because they were dear to me. The whole idea of "cookie cutter" fighters and rogues because their stats were the same is just alien to me. But then, I guess that's why I DM.

This is why the 3.5 rules are great. Who wants a +2 sword? Better to have a +1 sword with Warning or Valorous or whatever since there are no DR / "+3 magic item" monsters any more.

So, give the PCs a "named" +1 weapon at an early level and they can just add enhancements to it as they move up.

GMW makes higher enhancement bonuses obsolete.

And the fact that weapon special abilities are so much better than +x enhancement bonuses.

What if that +2 longsword your Fighter just found also granted him the ability to improve the skill of anyone making a Craft check in a 20' radius by the sword's bonus? Or your +3 armor made you smell good to those around you, regardless of your actual state of cleanliness and cultural or racial preferences?

Really? those are the examples you come up with?

I don't disagree with the concept, but if you gave me +3 armor of blood-bath and body works I would laugh, not be thank you.

blood bath and beyond.

Thunderfoot. so what if you had a new character and were playing when you came across the grave of your old character. course i guess not everyone plays in a persistant world like my group do

Ah, but if you were playing a "face" character- a nobleman, a bard- you might feel differently.
