After making sure that the animals are loaded with food and water, and that everyone is prepared, Rosa turns to the others and prepares to mount up. "Let's be off, then."

overland to Kha'Shazul

You leave Adderport with your horses. A day out, Saris and Rosa hear someone coming.

As you trun another corner along the overgrown jungle trail, you suddenly come across a well-armed lizardfolk standing somewhat surprised in the middle of the path. He eyes you warily as he motions to another half-dozen lizardfolk behind him.

OOC Spot and sense motive checks, please.

Hightower, sitting a bit higher than the others, looks evenly across the path at the reptilian group. Spot: (1d20+5=20). Pausing only a moment before dismounting from the large skittish animal. The spikes of his armor and the spikes of his chain slide smoothly over eachother yet still make a terrible grinding sound, like the soulless growl of the metal's very own malevolent intent. His massive tower shield still in hand for the moment, he squares off against the troupe.

Having struggled with his mount the entire journey, Fenwick was very absorbed with keeping upright on the pony, which he was convinced was half-demon for the way it kept trying to buck him off. As such he was more concerned with his own difficulties than what was happening on the road ahead.

preliminary results of spots and sense motives

[sblock=For Hightower]Hightower spots several more lizardfolk behind the hulk in front of you. All, including the one in the lead, are crudely bandaged or injured.[/sblock]

[sblock=For Trent]Trent notices that the rather muscular lizardfolk in the path is both cautious and deferential. The brute makes a sign to someone or something behind him suggesting others that Trent has not noticed. The sign suggests that the leader is calling a halt and seems to be suggesting that the others ready themselves. There is something odd about it though. Considering your group's proximity it would make no sense for him to attempt stealth at this distance so the use of sign language seems out of place.[/sblock]

Trent summarizes that they are not being stealthy on his or his allies' account, and that there is something else amiss. Why else would they be quiet in this distance, and use sign language. He holds his hands out, non threatening, and says softly to the others, "Keep your guard. I don't think they are being quiet for us. Something else might be out here..."

None of the lizardfolk appear to be using stealth, and the lizardman in the lead sees Trent looking around for threats and starts to look as well.

At about the same time, a voice begins speaking from the back of the line, in a language that only Rosa can make out. Its nasal tone and whine suggest complaint and dissatisfaction, and somehow all get a sense that the speaker is a cantankerous curmudgeon. Halfway through the tirade, the muscled lizardman at the front makes another series of signs toward the back. Rosa guesses that he is a mute.

[sblock=For Rosa]The tirade in draconic yelled from the back of the line of lizardfolk is peppered with explitives and phrases that offend the ears of the somewhat demur Rosa. In draconic: "Why have we stopped? You son of a trognator,* I'll skin your hide if you have been scared by another boar." The mute signs, "threats" toward the unseen speaker. He continues his tirade as he is approaching, "Well, go ahead and kill them and take their gold, we have to pay... Oh, I see. They are too much for us take." Finally coming into view he spots Hightower and the Faris-panther and stops abruptly. Walking with a cane, the elderly lizardfolk apears to be some kind of respected elder, although why anyone would respect such a surly and foul mouthed individual is anyone's guess. "Well, are you just going to stand there; step aside and let them pass. After the beating we have taken we are clearly no match for them."

OOC *- this word literally translates as hole in the ground, and Rosa interprets to be a crude and vulgar word for slattern. In the modern vernacular it would have connotations similar to "hood rat."[/sblock]

An elderly lizardman moves to the front of the line, and after words directed toward the rest, each lizardfolk in the line steps to the side of the road to let your group pass.
