Hugh Grant is a villain in a lot of things and is likely to get an Emmy award for a villainous role he just did on HBO. The fact that he's a villain in no way implies this is a kid's movie.

Not getting the Dagult Neverember vibe, but that might be more due to being spoiled with the Neverwinter MMO?

People are also willing some of this stuff into being, without much evidence. There was a time when many people insisted it made no sense that the D&D movie could be anything other than Dragonlance.

Now that filming is underway, more details will be coming soon. The studios will want to hype the summer movie cycle, especially as they have 2020 revenues to make up for, but after that, I'd expect them to open the firehose on info about this film.

I recently watched Cloud Atlas. Grant played something like 5 different villain roles in the movie - he does a great job on all of them. One, you'd never even know it was him unless you knew to look for him and were watching carefully (it's not a small role, he's just in makeup and blends into the role so seamlessly).

He's said it's character work in general. Before he was the leading romantic man, he was a character and comedic actor. The fact that a lot of these parts are villainous just shows you who the most interesting characters tend to be.

I'm not sure why you keep hitting on the "white" part. Most actors in English-speaking films are white. It would also be a real issue if he wasn't playing someone who was white. (Although, who knows, maybe he's one of the 10 million people allegedly showing up in an Avatar sequel, so maybe he'll be a blue person, too.)

On the plus side I'm more inclined to believe Hugh Grant can pull this off just not sure if he's the true villain of the movie though.

He was the villain in the Paddington movie. So this Dungeons and Dragons movie may be very child friendly.

He was also a villain in The Gentleman. Not sure how child friendly that was.
