They'll be using it to reveal stuff about upcoming D&D projects (including video games and entertainment). The video will be presented by Anna Prosser and B. Dave Walters.

This is being billed in an emailed announcement entitled "Learn Everything That’s Happening This Year for Dungeons & Dragons" as the "first ever D&D Direct", so presumably there are more planned.

I really like that alt cover. Especially when I realized it was the POV of one of the characters from the other cover.

(or I was told, but I assume I’m smarter than that……)

Yeah, I do suspect almost that there might not be a Summer Adventure at all, since there has never been more than 2 big Adventure books in a year for 5E, but who knows?

I'm fairly certain the summer adventure is still a thing. I can't remember where it was said/hinted, but there was a nimplication that the annual adventure books tend to always sell well, as there is a group of people who buy them, run them in about a year, and then pick up the newest one when it releases.

I also would guess that the D&D team does not consider the Netherdeep book to fill the same niche. They released in different quarters and it's marketed largely for a CR audience (it can appeal to others, but Mercer was tied closely in marketing).

Ostensibly, yes, but considering that the film was pretty much DOA when it finally came out, I suspect they also knew that it was a stinker.

Oh totally agree. Part of the delays are due to the studio waiting for a week where they wouldn't have any competition... which they did, but in week 2 it dropped by 76%. Which is apparently the biggest drop for a superhero movie since Steel... and I've seen a lot of movies, and I barely know what Steel is!

For @Rabulias and @ersatzphil, here's an updated chart:

Note that the 2022-24 is based on five books per year, and extrapolating the pattern of product types - we don't know if they'll stick to that, or what sort of "new formats" will be in the works, potentially require a new color. The chart probably could use something in the orange-red range!

Yeqh, it wouldn't surprise me: but either way, they are going to do something new on yhat front.

Maybe, but unless the "new format" involves a hybrid adventure/setting, and/or they expand to five books, they've still got two classic settings to unroll, and I don't think we've heard anything about pushing one back to 2023. But I haven't been following very closely.

The confirmed leaker on reddit scorched earth their account, but I recall them saying that WotC was working on a shocking amount of new material. Unfortunately removeddit and ceddit don't seem to be working any more, but I think it was in this thread. Of course, Winninger has mentioned how much they work on gets left on the cutting room floor, but still.

Well, recall that Monsters of the Multiverse was supposed to come out in 2021, and was delayed: it is not inconceivable that they will have more than 5 books. They never promised a specific number, and they break patterns qll the time.
