Streaming Services: First 2023 POWER RANKINGS (And what's up with Prime?)

I am on my phone and can't link to an article right now, but I saw that Paramount+ and Showtime are getting merged together.

Also, Disney will be doing their first ever full-season drop of a Marvel or Star Wars show when they release Echo at the end of November.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but Disney is pulling content from D+ and from Hulu, for...REA$0N$!?!? I guess it's for tax breaks, so someone who understands that should chime in.

So, it's time to bump the following to the top of your watchlist:

So, they don't want to pay money to the people who made the shows that I pay a monthly fee to watch on their service. Cool. Got it.

I mean ... yeah.

The avalanche has begun, it is too late for the pebbles to vote. Or, put another way, now that the Zaslav has broken the seal, expect the deluge.

Netflix pioneered the idea of the long-tail with streaming services, but did so early on when they could cheaply buy streaming rights to various programs.

Then, everyone yanked back their content and put it up on their own streaming services along with commissioning tons more shows since they were all competing to be one of the surviving streaming services.

Unfortunately, many of them have learned something- this costs a lot of money. You either get it subsidized (Amazon, Apple), you already have a profitable model (Netflix), or you're shoveling money into the abyss.

So they are turning around and determining what people are actually watching, and applying cost/benefit to it- the marginal value of some of the shows being available isn't worth the cost to these platforms.

Expect more shaking out and consolidation. IMO, etc.

Most of this stuff will be available on other services. They're not treating this like Atari 2600 ET cartridges and burying them in a landfill -- they're going to put these shows on the market for other streamers to show.

It's not the same situation as Batgirl, where they could write off an uncompleted work on their taxes. This is completed product that they don't want to pay royalties on, but are hoping to find another streaming company willing to do so. I would expect The One and Only Ivan and Y: The Last Man, for instance, to both show up elsewhere soon.

This is an absolutely incredible show, and it's criminal that it was both (a) canceled and (b) being fully removed from the only platform it has ever been legally available on
