It is extreme, but its the only way to express to Wizards that Alignment matters. Candlekeep dropped it, so I didnt buy Candlekeep. For example.
Fair. I'm not sure that alignment does matter, but I accept that it does to you (and others who like it). I'm generally in support of people who's playstyle and preferences are different than mine, so I hope you get what you want. Obviously, it would be just as easy for me if it were there, and I can ignore it as I choose.

It does matter for the brand, due to the popularity of alignment chart memes. But it doesn't have to be deterministic.

My biggest sources of trepidation are the format (which worked spectularly well for Spelljammer as I'm sure we can all agree) and current 5e meta to try to de-emphasize alignment as much as possible, which in Planescape, doesn't really work.
Alignment is honestly not that important in planescape. It was far more about strange philosophies

It's not important to Sigil, but it's the skeletal structure the Outer Planes are built on and a fair amount really don't have a theme to them at all without their alignment identity. Mechanus is the Lawful Neutral Plane, if Mechanus isn't about Lawfulness, then what is its theme?

There are even more dependant upon alightment for identity planes, like Arcadia and Biopotia, without alignment they are extremely boring and have no identity at all. The more Chaotic Good planes don't suffer nearly as much from this as they draw deeply from Mythological roots more (really only Mount Celestial aka Heaven really seems to have a sold flavour Lawful God wise), but Aborea becomes Greece's Feywild, Beastlands become Lion's Safari, and Ysgard become Viking Village.
