A gamist rationale, but yes, a sensible one from that perspective.

And before anyone says anything, I believe that classes and levels have some meaning in-universe, and are not just a gamist construct.
I actually give the classes and levels meaning in my universe too. Lots of variants, sure, but training as a Ranger, Wizard, or Cleric, means something. Any class with spell level progression has a literal measuring tool to determine the "level" they've reached.

Fighters, Rogues, and Barbarians (classes with generic, broad-concepted class names and no spell slots) have more freedom and malleability when it comes to how they are perceived. I think that is a positive as it brings a different feel.

With 3e it was 2 years, so WotC have at least been vaguely consistent on this through their editions.

Still way too fast for me - I want the game designed to allow (and encourage) campaigns to last 10+ years even if they never get near capstone level.
Have you ever considered that that you are the outlierest of outliers? :D

Great break down. I've never really looked too hard at this as we just play and roll with it. Analyzing it further with experience from years of play (within the life of 5e anyways) it makes sense. Some things I felt were "kinda odd" makes better sense with a deeper look. It definitely won't stop me from upgrading but it is something I do hope gets addressed.
I think that it's reasonable to assume a significant chunk of no votes are leaning towards some other system (mcdm/daggerheart/ToV/levelup/etc) simply because the 2024 stuff wotc has shown is not different enough & is trying too hard to remain identical in RAW rather than addressing problems. Will I switch to something other than 2014 5e within the next year if not already? Yes absolutely. Will it be the 2024 version of d&d?... maybe, but out of all those options it is the one demonstrating the least for me to care about & is pretty low on the list as a result. I noted as much earlier in 263.

Meh, with 2/3rds planning on adopting 2024 right out of the gate, I imagine that within a couple of years, most of those who are continuing to play D&D will adopt as well. Since the number of gamers who aren't playing D&D are essentially a rounding error, I can't see this as being too much of a problem.

I agree. The vast majority of people still playing 5E D&D are going to convert sooner or after. And, frankly, some of us that are "no way" will probably cave when all our friends want to play it.

Here's hoping they put the whole SRD in CC so I don't ever have to give them money, though.

I have an opposite view. Since 1/3 isn't planning on going forward, that means there's room for a substantial 5e-grognard community to continue -there are enough differences between the non-editions and unmet wants with the new one for it to be possible-. I mean if the desire for iterating, tinkering, and hacking doesn't destroy group unity before it has had the time to gel.

Oh, and I'm sure that will happen. And that's fine.

I just rather hope though that the 5e-grognard community doesn't turn out so toxic that they need to yuck in everyone else's yum every single time WotC bangs out a new book or whatever. If the 5e grognard community goes off and does a Dragonsfoot, creating a vibrant, healthy community that keeps cheerleading it's own preferences without pooping in everyone else's cornflakes, that's the best result we can hope for. Everyone goes off and plays the games they love. Fantastic.

I am afraid, though, of the 5e-grognard community being far more like the 3e-grognard community, turning incredibly toxic and being completely incapable of letting other people enjoy something different, like we saw with the release of 4e. Particularly since there are a number of people who feel the incessant need to bang the "WotC is bad" drum endlessly, and will use any sort of perceived separation of different communities as tacit agreement with their issue du jour. "Oh, you are still playing 5e, that must mean that you think WOtC is the worst thing in the world! See how those guys hate 2024? That's because everyone hates WotC and isn't WotC just the worst?"

Having had to go through that for freaking YEARS with 4e, I really hope that this time around, people who want to stick with 2014 can do so without endlessly telling me what's wrong with the things that I like.

Yeah, that is a reasonable fear. I don't hate WotC, but right now it is hard to be its cheerleader. Too much stuff happened last year. I'm not even sure if I want to keep playing og5e. If the community turns too toxic, I might have no option but to retreat to 3.5, or do my own stripped down alternative and try my luck.
