I read recently in the news that cats were surpassing dogs as the most common pet in America, but the ratio was still very close.

I've heard that as well, and part of me wonders if it's a result of the modern lifestyle more than anything else. A bit lower-maintenence animal that isn't kept/cared for in a cage, which seems to be a bit more ideal if its owners are off at work/the gym/socializing/etc. most of the day.

This poll really should have been multiple-choice. No one here has fish? I'm assuming all of the aquarium owners also have a dog and/or cat, bird, etc, thus they voted for multiple pets.

Automated poop machines... I mean dogs! Two goofy german shepherds to be more precise. And one thinks she's a cat, so I guess I'm a cat person as well.

I'm a cat person, though I'm not adverse to dogs.

I recently gave away my cat as it was an out door cat and wee had just moved to a flat, with massive stairs next a busy road. Shame that was. He was crazy

I do like the look of (but have never owned) those kind of pets that you can keep on a shoulder or hold like small geckos, rats, ferrets and the like. I am concidering getting a ferret actually, but our house isn't ferret proof. :(

Am I the only Reptile lover here?

Not at all. It's been roughly four years since I had to give up my Louie due to an unexpected move, and I still miss him like the dickens. :(

Cat person. I've always had cats and I probably always will, even though I'm allergic. My brother is too, and we seem to have built up a tolerance to our cats' particular type of allergen. For a long time, we just had one, Ginger, but in the last year we've taken in a shelter cat, Jack, and a polydactal, former feral kitten, Oedi Puss.

Besides them, I've had two other cats, Maxine and Smudge; a pure white pigeon named Mike; a Guinea pig named Buster; and a goldfish named Rudolph. Rudolph was one of those fish that wouldn't die. He was around for a few years, if I recall correctly.

I've never had a dog, but I really want one, since you can do more things with them. Can't take the cats for walks, can't throw things and have them bring it back.

Well, I love my dog dearly, he is my baby...but my one true love will always be ferrets.

I miss my ferrets, may they rest in peace. :(

I'm a big fan of horses too.
