Day 4, Level 3 (cumulative)

The fourth day out of Velkynvelve saw another eight-hour march pass by at a more leisurely pace, and without incident. Kamael felt his stomach shrink in on itself. His head began to cloud, become fuzzy. He'd had nothing to eat since the fish stew two days prior, and had run out of water. He stumbled, tripping and losing his footing more often than the others.

The slow pace, however, gave the group time to more thoroughly soak in their environment. The passageway remained maddening close, and, worse, showed no sign of abating. The walls pressed tightly, at times shrinking to a very narrow two feet in breadth, requiring squeezing in places. There was, however, time to forage. The group found four large cask-shaped fungi growing at odd angles out of a rock outcropping. "Barrelstalk," proclaimed Jimjar to Solace in Undercommon, pointing at the fungi. "We can eat and drink, a little, from them." The deep gnome proceeded to use a dagger he'd kept hidden under his tunic to splice the stalk of the closest fungus. The group watched as a thin stream of water poured from the slice, enough to fill four waterskins or so, which was good because there'd been no water since the disastrous watch the night prior. Once the first mushroom was drained, JimJar cut off a section of the barrel-shaped fungus's woody stalk and popped it in his mouth, chewing. "Better than quaggoth." He smiled.

OOC: There are four barrelstalk mushrooms, and they yield 9 filled waterskins and 11 pounds of food. Are you guys going to force march onward (each extra hour of forced march risks exhaustion), or make camp for a rest?

Solace is grateful for the drink, and between the meat and the fungus and the liquid it held, she was feeling stronger. Back to full strength. Looking around at the others, she feels this is a reasonable time to rest, and she offers, as usual, to take the first watch.

" Thanks for your concern, Kago ", Kamael says with no hint of irony, " Once I get some barrel stalk in me I'll be right as rain; I'm used to going days between meals..

I'll take a watch with Shushaar again, in the usual order, or whenever.. "

The watch set on day four out of Velkynvelve passed uneventfully. No noises were heard. Nothing was seen. Nothing crept toward the party. After eight full hours of rest, everyone rose ready to set off once again. After eating enough yesterday to stave off starvation and prevent dehydration, the group still had 3 pounds of barrelstalk mushroom and 1 waterskin full of water. The supplies were meager when faced with another full day of walking, and there was neither food nor water anywhere near the encampment. The uneaten two pounds of quaggoth flesh were also still on hand, though had likely begun to spoil if the smell was anything to go by.

OOC: Start of Day 5. First person to respond gets to call the pace: fast, normal, or slow. You could attempt to eat the quaggoth flesh, but it'd be a Constitution saving throw DC 11 to avoid being nauseated.

OOC: slow pace please, though I may be exempt since I called it last time! But it brought us the food we needed!

Kamael is remembering to retrieve the caltrops each morning & reset them when we make camp; also casting twined Mage armour on Kamael & Solace before we travel.

Solace hears her fellow aasimar's pleas for slowness, and she is grateful that his magic protects her as well as him.

"Come on, come on," she urges. "Our bellies are full. We should make the best time we can today."
