Day 5, Level 2 (cumulative)

At Solace's urging, Kago set an unflagging pace. The group marched without stopping for a full eight hours. The fast clip precluded foraging, so the group made do on the leftover 3 pounds of barrelstalk mushroom, and only 1 waterskin of water. It wasn't enough to sustain the pace, not between eight individuals (Stool continued to draw succor from mere air and moisture drawn from bare rock, seemingly). By the end of the day, everyone was exhausted. Except Stool, who was his stalwart little self.

OOC: A character needs 1 pound of food per day but can go without food for a number of days equal to 3 + his or her Constitution modifier before automatically suffering one level of exhaustion. PHB 185. Kago, Raza, Solace, Kamael, Brinn, Shuushar, Turvey, and Jimjar have split 3 pounds of food 8 ways, so each of you have gone the equivalent of just over a third of a day without food. If we were keeping track particularly vehemently. No exhaustion has been suffered on Day 5 from lack of food. I don't imagine it's very pleasant being hungry, however.

The water is an entirely different situation. There, you're all in more of a dire strait. A character needs 1 gallon of water per day (I'm counting one waterskin full as one gallon). A character with access to half that amount of water must succeed on a Constitution DC 15 saving throw or suffer one level of exhaustion. A character with access to even less water automatically suffers a level of exhaustion. PHB 185. Eight of you split one gallon of water. Kago, Raza, Solace, Kamael, Brinn, Shuushar, Turvey, and Jimjar all suffer exhaustion level 1 at the end of Day 5's eight hours of walking. Unless you find more water, each of you is dehydrated and therefore has disadvantage on ability checks. If you finish a long rest having ingested food and drink, you'll be back at level 0 (unexhausted/normal). I note Kago's character sheet in the RG says he has create or destroy water prepared, industrygothica. You need an "open container" for the spell to work, as you observed in the OOC. A waterskin is not an open container, but a bucket, barrel, swimming pool, or really large wine glass is. I'll allow the first person to see this note to make a percentile die roll to determine if the group chances upon a natural terrain feature in some of the rock you've passed by today that would hold 10 gallons of water. 1-50, you find a divot in a rock that will hold water, 51-00 you get nada.

Shuushar sat down, clearly tired. After a few minutes of catching his breath, the kuo-toa wheezed out, "We are within a day's walk of gaining the lake. In my estimation." The frogling leaned back against the wall in an uncharacteristic reclining pose and shut his eyes. Turvey said nothing, but flopped in a sprawl directly on the limestone floor of the passageway. There was more room here. The tunnel had widened to fifteen feet in places, and the ceiling grew taller and more filled with crags. Patches of rock glowed with faerzress, which dimly illuminated the space in soft shades of blue-tinged perse.

All was silent.

Solace is pleased to be making good distance, but feels very thirsty. She knows that sometimes priests have been known to create water. She does not know if Kago's Gruumsh is one such god, but she does know enough not to suggest it to the Orc. Make the situation ready for him to get the idea is what she thinks. Consequently, taking the leather from her old armour, she attempts to sew it into an open-mouthed sack. She's comfortable working leather, and the skin should be water-tight if she can close the holes.

The neckline and sleeves are easily shut. It's the stab wounds from which she was not fully protected that still are open and are more difficult to sew closed. If she's lucky, she can use her own foul rags as a large, open ended container for water.

OOC: Brilliant! Does Solace have inspiration right now? I think she does, but if not +1 inspiration.

Solace spent some time stitching leather into a makeshift vessel to hold water. Turvey got up from his sprawl and crept over to watch her at work, his large silent eyes focused on her stitching. When she was done, Solace had fashioned her old armor into a misshapen but serviceable open container. It might leak, but it would do to hold any water the orc cared to call upon Gruumsh to create, at least long enough for eight thirsty individuals to dip and fill their waterskins.

OOC: Jesus Kobold Stew, you totally read my mind. I was two seconds away from posting "Gee, I wish we knew a leather worker who could sew quaggoth hide," or something of the like. Did I mention that I really, really enjoy this team?

Kago retreats to a corner and silently prays for Gruumsh's insight. He knows he can create the water, but there is no container to be found. Then he notices Solace.

Kago approaches Solace and stands silently over her while she works. "Gruumsh speaks to you," he says as he reaches his filthy hand over her small frame and takes the leather bucket. He retreats back to his corner and positions the bucket in front him while he kneels. He gently removes the ceramic eye from under his armor and begins a low, nearly inaudible chant.

It was magic, pure and simple. Orc magic in the Underdark. At Kago's deft touch and rumbled prayer, the leather vessel filled with water. So much water that it spilled the lip of the bowl, overflowing and watering the hard limestone floor. An oasis in a desert of rock.

Raza Thulcandra

As at the end of every march, whether the group plans to just catch their breath and nibble on whatever they've managed to scrounge or if they plan to try for a longer sleep, Raza moves away from the others and prays to her goddess in a tone that sounds more like a one-sided argument than any sort of prayer. After long minutes of this she stops and rejoins the group. This night she finds Kago and Solace have worked together to catch water from Kago's magic. She fills her waterskin and wets a rag to dab at the lacerations on her palm that look suspiciously fresh. Only after tending to her hand does she drink deeply.

Raza sighs and smacks her lips at the pleasure of the drink of cold water. "It is good." She nods her approval of the accomplishment.

The passageway bent to the south, probably temporarily. Nothing so far had been straight during the journey. Or level, for that matter. The ground and ceiling rose and dipped without notice, prompting more than one stumble over the course of the last five days. Here, the ground was sandy and the passageway wide, much wider than previously. The ceiling was higher, too; forty feet, by the look of it, and littered with craggy stalactites that cast shadows in the queer light of the faerzress.

The group settled in for a long rest, and set their usual watch order. Kamael and Shuushar took first watch, and were to be followed by Brinn, Stool, and Jimjar, and then Solace and Turvey on mid-watch. Kago and Raza were, as usual, to take last watch. An hour into his watch, Kamael realized Shuushar had fallen asleep. Movement caught Kamael's eye. A very long green tentacle begun to unfurl from a crevice in a stalagmite formation opposite his present location. Giant-sized suction cups dotted the underside of the tentacle.

OOC: The entire passageway section on the map is dimly illuminated, including the ceiling. Perception checks made in dim lighting by characters without darkvision suffer disadvantage on checks that rely on sight. Characters with darkvision treat dim lighting as bright lighting and therefore do not suffer disadvantage on Perception checks. Spellcasters with prepared spells will be able to alter spells prepared at the end of the next uninterrupted long rest.
