Raza moved away from the wall of the cavern where she had bedded down out a short ways into the cavern so that she could get a better look at the creature. She gasped at the sight of the malign, tentacled monster and quickly chanted the words to summon fire to her hand. She waited, looking for the right moment, then lobbed the ball of fire in her hand at it.

Kamael realised he was too close to the octopus and probably could be attacked by its tentacles. His initial magic seemed to have hurt it though, so he tapped into the weave once more in an attempt to pin it against the stalagmite and prevent it advancing.

A fiery blaze sprang into existence. " Who wants to eat some roast octopus then? I hear it's yummy! "

Round 1

Raza shuffled forward, squinted at the behemoth, then summoned flame and flung it at the rocktopus, hitting the creature squarely for 4 points damage. Solace stayed where she was but quickly loaded her crossbow and fired. Instead of hitting the oversized land octopus, however, the bolt shattered the mid-section of the stalagmite from which the creature oozed. Kamael, too, stayed in place. Casting a spell, Kamael focused on the small bit of ground still visible beneath the foremost tangle of the rocktopus's tentacles, and wove a magical bonfire. The rocktopus--totally unaware of what Kamael was doing--failed to dodge out of the way, and suffered 7 points of fire damage.

On fire and enraged, the rocktopus snaked forward away from the bonfire, and shot out its meatiest tentacle at Kamael. The creature moved with alacrity; Kamael found himself clobbered about the head, and, with the tentacle threatening to entangle him, oxygen began to be scarce. The tentacle's hold began to tighten, dealing a critical total of 17 points of damage. Kamael slumped, losing consciousness.

A smaller tentacle began unfurling and reaching for Jimjar, whose eyes widened in fear.


OOC: The rocktopus has 15' reach. By my count, Kamael has 17 hp. Since he's suffered 17 hp in one critical hit, he's not instantly dead but instead is unconscious and dying. He will need to make death saving throws starting on Round 2 (if no healing is administered prior to his turn). Additionally, Kamael is automatically grappled, which is a feature of the monster. If Kamael ends up somehow being conscious, he could make an Athletics or Acrobatics (your choice) DC 16 check to get out of the grapple. Kago's turn, [MENTION=23298]industrygothica[/MENTION]!

OOC: Damn, I should have made it clearer in the text, but Kamael moved back to k8 after casting create bonfire. I'll make sure next time to describe the move, never mind!

The bonfire will go out when Kamael loses consciousness (which should be a hint to the other characters!)
 

OOC: That's my bad. You declared K8 in your post up-thread. We'll do this: Kamael moved to K8. The rocktopus also moved forward on its turn, and now occupies M11, M12, N11, and N12. It has both enough movement and enough reach to move there and still reach Kamael and inflict the damage it's done.
 

OOC: Your legal training has prepare you well for game mastering - that is a fine & fair ruling which doesn't help me at all! :-P

Should I have made a second wild magic check for the create bonfire BTW? Wasn't sure if that was a one off or applied to all my spells in this cavern..
 

OOC: Nope. The wild magic surge occurs only on a 1st level spell. Create bonfire is a cantrip. The double roll the other time--for chromatic orb--was for a different reason. :)
 

Kago's eyes had already adjusted to the light of the bonfire, and so he was startled at the temporary blindness caused to him when the fire's light suddenly vanished. He heard a strange gurgling sound, and, as he blinked away the blackness, he saw that the creature had entangled the sorcerer in one of its tentacles and was snuffing the life from him.

And then Kago did what Kago does: He raised his warhammer and charged the beast with all his fury, aiming high.

End of Round 1

Warhammer in hand, Kago charged and bashed the betentacled behemoth on its corpulent maw, dealing 10 points of damage. He left a king-sized dent in the side of the rocktopus's head. His first blow stilled the beast, felling it in place. The tentacle holding Kamael's limp form loosed slightly but otherwise remained coiled 'round the sorcerer.

Truly, the rocktopus was huge. Even slumped in on itself in death, it towered above both Kago and Raza. A mess of tentacles--some of them still wiggling with false life--lay coiled and strewn about the body. Jimjar shrank backward, well away from the behemoth, but Turvey and Shuushar crept closer. Turvey babbled excitedly in Undercommon and pointed. Solace made out a tidbit here and there, "#&S*($% &^ ! spit! Ne'er ---- @&^# the ---- of that! )(*$ were ------ *$&# --- tarrasque @( %(@! ---- --- #(*! with Topsy, it were!"

Shuushar pondered a long moment, then wondered aloud, "T'were a very large thing to come out of so small a hole. Perhaps we would be well served to search the remainder of the cavern? Though, I confess myself tired after so many days of walking on so little." This was the most the taciturn kuo-toa had offered in three days.

OOC: END OF COMBAT. That was fun! Please post at will. Kago did not have to use either his Warpriest bonus action or Inspiration to kill the rocktopus, so he still has both available to him.
