D&D General Backstories: good, bad or whatever?

I've found that a tip I got worked well. If the player is stumped to have a backstory, write one sentence. '(character name) is a(n) (adjective) (character race), (character class) who wants (noun).' That's usually plenty.

D&D 5E evil character idea for general creation

If you're starting at low levels, consider the Inheritor background. Maybe your character was supposed to inherit Item X but didn't get it because it was stolen by a famous thief whom the guard didn't catch. Now you set out on adventure to recover it. Then when it's level appropriate, the DM...

    D&D (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

Secondary to the good stuff here, WotC stop it with the needless name changes of things. I've played with hundreds people over the decades and not heard from anyone offended by the word Ki.

    D&D (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

That's fair. It is a minor ability. The flavor of snatching an arrow out of the air is a fun thought. but in play doesn't turn the tide. I like deflect attack, I keep thinking of deflecting a melee attack successfully and taking the weapon away to throw at someone, or deflecting and unarmed...

    D&D (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

My initial impression, The Ki Point cost removal and changes to Step of the Wind and Patient Defense are good, and much needed. The Bonus action attack is good and it gives the Monk options in melee that only the monk can get starting Early. i.e. a reason to not just be an unarmed fighter...

D&D (2024) Does WotC view the Monk class as overtuned from their perspective?

I have no problem with differing opinions from my (passionate) one about this, and again, play the way you enjoy, but playing an unarmed specialist martial with a d4 weapon that has to spend points to do what a fighter can do at-will with d6 or d8 from 1st level is objectively bad design. If the...

D&D (2024) Does WotC view the Monk class as overtuned from their perspective?

With a standard array you can potentially have two 16s at 1st. That isn't the problem. The problem is that two abilities that in principal work well (Flurry and Stunning) are tied to a d4. The d4 Martial Arts damage is a non-ability because all the weapons in the game except the blowgun already...

    D&D 5E Chronurgy Wizard Build

So kicking around ideas for a chronurgist. Has anyone used it in play? What worked well for you and what didn't?

    D&D (2024) Playtest Packet 6: Monk reactions?

If they truly intend it to be a revision and not a whole new edition, then the simplest fixes are the best, give him a fighting style at 1st, make Unarmed strike (FINALLY) a Martial Melee Weapon and a Monk Weapon and make the three special attacks of the Way of the open Hand it's Martial...

    D&D (2024) Playtest Packet 6: Monk reactions?

My response to the Monk play test survey. 'It's so bad that if it isn't fixed, it'll effect my decision to buy the book.' Simple fix.

D&D (2024) Predictions for Playtest packet 7's arrival

I hope they read the feedback. My own yes, but I hope they read a lot of it. The monk is so bad, I answered the survey saying that if it remained so, it would affect my decision on whether to get any of the new rule books.

D&D 5E Glory of the Giants' AI-Enhanced Art

Doing it without permission would be plagiarism. Doing it on a project for hire with the go ahead from the publisher paying both artists for their work is working on the project. And it isn't by mistake to'miss' that an AI tool was used. As WotC rightly points out, there was no guideline against...

D&D 5E Glory of the Giants' AI-Enhanced Art

If they found anyone else whose work was plagiarized, that would be different for me, but if he used computer tools to edit or 'enhance, his own work and did so himself, that's him doing his job. It's a big 'so what.'

    D&D (2024) Playtest 6 Survey is Open

Thank You friend. No criticism of your view is intended. Only of the theory put forth by others that the monk is somehow 'catching up'.

    D&D (2024) Playtest 6 Survey is Open

The d6 is better at 1st because d4 is useless on anything but unarmed strikes. Decoupling the Martial arts die from weapons only makes sense if the intent is to encourage the use of Unarmed Strikes. Uncoupling Flurry of Blows from Stunning Strike though has the opposite effect and Nerfs both...

    D&D (2024) Playtest 6 Survey is Open

Agree and I encourage everyone to give constructive feedback on the things I like and don't. My comment stands however in that the monk is mechanically bad in 5e and in this play test the proposed fixes are so bad that they make me consider not getting the new PHB at all.

    D&D (2024) Playtest 6 Survey is Open

Agree, but the Monk is so bad that if it doesn't improve, it may cause me to simply keep playing 5E as it is.

D&D (2024) Does WotC view the Monk class as overtuned from their perspective?

Mostly agree, but Unarmed Strike proficiency with a d4 is not as valuable as a martial weapon proficiency. That's why WotC has deliberately (and IMHO mistakenly) refused to make Unarmed Strike a Martial Melee Weapon. This would allow monks to use many more feats and Martial Maneuvers that...

D&D (2024) Does WotC view the Monk class as overtuned from their perspective?

But who starts with a 19 AC in any class? If you have a 20 Dex and an 18 Wis. sure, but what game allows that at 1st level? and just what are you seeing scaling fast? Your martial arts die is a d4 at 1st. That doesn't scale damage to d8 with unarmed strike until 11th level and you could get that...

D&D (2024) Does WotC view the Monk class as overtuned from their perspective?

I think they see it as way more powerful than it is in play, and I think they are wrong (again). The Play test 6 Monk is the one subject that made me specifically angry at the designers. In 5e, Martial Arts giving a D4 is a non-benefit on everything but Unarmed Strike, Stunning Strike is...
