No, the book she is carrying has her notes (in an obscure short-hand) on her recent discoveries. Her spellbook is in her foot-locker.

I propose we let the Merc go (the way we came in), or he can be tied up, bound and gagged, like Valendra will be and left with the kobolds. Either way, I think we have the information we need to proceed. Is that right?

Urgan (and others) would likely, by now, have the impression that the Kobolds will likely murder them, or even more likely, throw them to a large beetle in their "battle pit" and watch them fight it. (Probably after maiming them somehow to make the fight more "fair" - for the beetle.

Okay, I posted before reading this. I mean, they might ask us not to leave them with the kobolds.

I can edit if I have to. I don't want to let them go - it's too risky. They might get more out of betraying us.

Knowing the kobolds would torture them, Merrick wouldn't want that.

Instead of letting the mercenaries go could we pay them to escort Valendra out? We can ransom her spellbook. Promise to give it back to her at the base camp as long as she goes straight there?

(there's two mercenaries: one is unconscious - the 3rd - the houndsman - is dead.)

Edit: except she could probably offer them more so that's not a good call. And she might think betraying us will get her spellbook back.

There's one alive. You missed the part where the Kobolds trampled the unconscious one to death. On purpose.

Instead of letting the mercenaries go could we pay them to escort Valendra out? Edit: except she could probably offer them more so that's not a good call. And she might think betraying us will get her spellbook back.

Beast Boys. Also known as "The Beast's Boys".

Bardaby Coombs (their leader) is known as "The Beast". And they are terrified of him. You can't pay them enough to betray their commander, as long as he is alive. Some of them would be happy to see him dead, though!

Valendra can't learn anything for the Arcane Brotherhood if she's dead. The biggest problem with sending her to the Basecamp at Greenpeak is (aside from the logistics of her finding her way there) is the danger of acknowledging that the Basecamp even exists.

These mercenaries are with the Beast Boys? I thought they were Valendra’s personal mercenaries. That changes a lot. Merrick doesn’t have a lot of sympathy for the Beast Boys - from how you described them as being mostly criminals.
The Beast has that name because he's a terrible person with a terrible reputation, even among other mercenary companies. Yes, a lot of his recruits are made up of ruffians and criminals.

However, they also bully hapless folk into joining under duress. I wouldn't paint them all with the same brush, if I were you.

OTOH, I don't tend to judge player actions morally (well, I do, but only in my head).

My point is, I don't think that your characters have the moral or legal right to execute your prisoners.

But if you DO, given where you are, I don't think that you will find any consequences.

The lizard folk would be better candidates to watch prisoners. Which reminds me, sending lets the receivers send a message back. At this point, we'd know the lizardfolk are allies??? We sent that message an hour ago (which lines up to the point just before we did this long rest. So we'd have that knowledge, no?

Here's what I propose: we use the teleporter to go to the lake, drop the prisoners off at the lizard camp then continue on. That will happen about 10 minutes AFTER they are done dealing with the hydra.
