**Updated 22/10/15** - Technomancer archetype added. - input needed.
Updated 20/10/15 -Base class written up, Elementalist archetype started.

The Psion class in my homebrew setting Spirit is going to be a pretty big class with a lot of build options. I'm planning on using the Sorcerer as the base for the class as i feel that arcane preparation has very little place for a psionic class, and metamagic seems to fit nicely too. I'm thinking that the spellcasting ability should be Intelligence rather than Charisma (which is what divine casters will be using in the setting).

I have divided the spells in the PHB into psionic schools;

  • Animus - Telepathy, telekinesis, force or pure energy spells. At the moment has the biggest list.
  • Aeris - Weather control, lighting and thunder damage spells, flight and other air based spells. Opposed to Terra.
  • Aqua - Water and ice based spells, frost damage, at the moment a smaller school than most. Opposed to Ignis.
  • Ignis - Fire control and fire damage spells. Opposed to Aqua.
  • Terra - Earth control, interaction or control of plants. Opposed to Aeris.
  • Corpus - Body control, buffs & debuffs.
  • Cosmos - Teleportation, time or gravity control, divination.
  • Digitalis - Acid damage, technology control and interaction.
  • Lux - Illusions, some healing, radiant damage.
  • Tenebris - Necrotic damage, some healing, curses & inflicts.

There is cross over (some spells are in multiple lists, sometimes with slight differences dependant on which school).

At first level, the Psion (still not 100% convinced that this is the name I want to go with for the base class) has access to the Animus school, allowing spells like charm person, confusion, floating disk, kinetic [mage] hand, psi-missiles.

When the character chooses their archetype, this allows access to more schools as well as other archetype features, and at levels when metamagic would be available access to a new school could be attained instead;

  • Elementalist - Gains access to 2 non-opposing schools from Aeris, Aqua, Ignis or Terra, AOE control.
  • Luxiat / Prism - Gain access to Lux, improved vision & accuracy, healing feature.
  • Navigator - Gain access to Cosmos, otherworldy auras, piloting skills.
  • Psi-Warrior - [could be remaned] Gain access to Corpus, improved combat viability.
  • Tenebrite - Gain access to Tenebris, stealth skills, sneak attack?
  • Technomancer - Gain access to Digitalis, engineering skills, familiar (robot).

I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts/opinions/suggestions.

Here is the write up for the class so far:

[sblock=Features]
POWERCASTING

Functions as Spellcasting for the sorcerer (phb).

At some point in your life; commonly during puberty, trauma, or through exposure to another psion’s abilities, your latent psionic potential was realised. Your psionic potential could have been detected early and had been prepared for, or it could have happened spontaneously out of the blue.
No matter how you got them, your psionic awareness has opened your perception to Warp-space; another level of reality that permeates and surrounds Real-space and pervades all matter.
Through in-depth study of how these forces interact with matter and mental training and discipline, you are able to tap into the almost limitless energy present in Warp-space and use your mind to focus it and use it to affect the physical world around you.

Intelligence is the powercasting ability for your psion. You only have access to powers from the Animus psionic school at this point, your awakened disciple will give you access to one or two more, and you will have the option of gaining access to further schools at higher levels of the Psion class. Cantrips are renamed to Gifts, Spells are renamed to Powers.

AWAKENED DISCIPLINE

Replaces Sorcerous Origin.

Choose an awakened discipline, which describes the form your latent psionic powers take when they first manifest: Elementalist, Luxiat, Navigator, Psi-Warrior, Shadowmancer or Technomancer.
Your choice grants you access to one or more psionic schools, and grants you features when you choose it at 1st level and again at 6th, 14th, and 18th level.

FONT OF POWER

Functions as Font of Magic for the sorcerer.

Sorcery Points are renamed to Power Points.

EXPANDED AWARENESS

Replaces Metamagic for the sorcerer.

Metamagic is renamed to Manipulation
At 3rd level either gain two manipulation options, or gain one manipulation option and access to a new psionic school. At 10th and again at 17th level you gain access to either a new manipulation or a new psionic school.

ABILITY SCORE IMPROVEMENT

As sorcerer.

PSIONIC RESTORATION

Functions as Sorcerous Restoration for the sorcerer.

Psionic Schools

At 1st level gain access to two non-opposed psionic schools from the following options; Aeris (opposed with Terra), Aqua (opposed with Ignis), Ignis and Terra.

Absorb Elements

Your affinity with the elements you can control allows you to shrug off a portion of the damage that element can cause, and even store some of the energy to empower a future attack.
Starting at 1st level, you can use your reaction when you take damage of the type associated with a psionic school that you know (as shown in the table below), to gain resistance to the triggering damage type until the start of your next turn. Also, the first time on your next turn that you hit with a melee attack, or a psionic power with a target of one creature that already deals damage, the target takes an extra 1d6 damage of the triggering type, and the spell ends.
You can use your power points to increase the potency of the redirected energy, for every 2 power points you spend you can increase the damage by 1d6, though the amount of dice you roll can never exceed your proficiency bonus.
Once you have used this feature, you must complete a short or long rest before you can use it again.

Elemental Nature

As you learn to exert your psionic influence over the elements, they too begin to influence you and your emotional state, especially during and immediately after using psionic powers.
Aeris focuses an elementalist’s mind and encourages reasoned but dispassionate thought. Elementalists using the powers of Aqua seek calm co-operation between others, but can become over-sensitive to any criticism. Ignis brings an elementalist’s anger to the forefront, making them fierce opponents in battle but fractious allies away from combat. Terra instils patience and a practicality in its users, while making them stubborn or unimaginative.
At 1st level you gain proficiency in the skills associated with the two psionic schools you chose when you became an elementalist.

Elemental Affinity

Functions as for Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer.
Starting at 6th level, choose one psionic school from the following list, that you know; Aeris, Aqua, Ignis and Terra.
When you use a power that deals damage of the type associated with the chosen psionic school, add your Intelligence modifier to one damage roll of that spell. At the same time you may spend one power point to gain resistance to that damage type for one hour.

Psionic Schools

At 1st level you gain access to the Digitalis psionic school.

Digital Familiar

When you choose this awakened discipline at 1st level, you may spend 1 hour and 10c worth of scrap metal and mechanical parts to construct a robotic familiar which you then animate by imbuing it with a portion of your psionic awareness.
This feature functions as the spell find familiar (phb) with the following caveats:

· Its creature type becomes construct, instead of beast, or any other option.
· When your familiar drops to 0 hit points it stops functioning and falls prone where it is. You can spend 1 hour and an additional 10c worth of materials to repair and reactivate your familiar.
· You cannot dismiss or summon your familiar.
· As long as you are within 100 feet of your familiar you can instruct it to shut down or power up once during your turn as a free action.
· In order to deliver a power with a range of touch through your familiar you must also spend a number of power points equal to the power’s level.
· If your familiar is not within melee range of any enemies, and you or an ally within 5 feet of your familiar make a computer or engineering check, your proficiency bonus is added to the roll (stacks with tools).
· Some way to scale the familiar as you progress in level.

Technopathy

At 1st level you gain proficiency with the Engineering skill, and you gain proficiency with engi-kits. Whenever you make am ability check to interact with a computer, you may use your psionics skill in place of your computer skill.

Programed Power

Gain at 6th level, functions as the Program Spell feature of the technomancy arcane tradition presented in Unearthed Arcana: Modern Magic.
Also your familiar may now make an attack action if you expend 1 power point.

Chained Device

Gain at 14th level, functions as the feature of the same name in the technomancy arcane tradition presented in Unearthed Arcana: Modern Magic.
Your familiar can be used as a ‘suitable device’ as long as it is within 100 feet of you.

Digital Soul

Familiar improvement; perhaps larger size, or higher CR.
At 18th level you may transfer your consciousness fully into your familiar gaining its hit points, hit dice, AC, features, skills and attacks in addition to your class features, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma skills, and proficiencies; provided the form of your familiar has the capacity to utilise those abilities (i.e. walks on two legs or has opposable thumbs).
The possession lasts for 1 hour or until your familiar drops to 0 hit points, you then instantly return to your own body, in which case any excess damage carries over to you as psychic damage.
While inhabiting your familiar you may use an action to rearrange its structure and parts to take on a humanoid shape, but in doing so loose the use of any features that were dependant on the non- humanoid form (i.e. bite attacks). You can transform your familiar back to its original shape as a free action, if your consciousness leaves your familiar while it is in humanoid shape; it automatically reverts to its original form.
While your consciousness inhabits your familiar, your body enters a form of psionic stasis. It only gives of faint lifesign readings and heat, meaning it cannot be detected from more than 10 feet away. If your body suffers damage, you become aware of it immediately and may return to your body as a reaction.

Ideas for lux-Mancy names:

I like where this is going. Wizards needs to flesh out their psionics class.

Thanks for the suggestions :) I've rifted on them and I like the sound of Luxiat or Prism, but am torn between them.

I've updated the OP with the 1st draft of class so far, including all base features, and made a start on the archetypes.

Technomancer awakened discipline added, need some critiques / suggestions. Particularly as concerns scaling the familiar; I'm hoping that with all the animal companion/ranger discussions that were just dying down when I returned to the forums, there will definitely be some opinions on how to go about this.
