Hexblade 22-2 = 20 a cowardly attempt to fix Pact of the Blade through a new patron rather than grasping the nettle and releasing errata, which became the core of the most obnoxious online min-max power builds, and which involves a patron with hardly any background or lore so you have to try to somehow cram them into the setting and invent motivations for them yourself, no matter how poorly they fit? Ick. Die you horrible thing.

FWIW, multiclassing IS optional and only about half the groups use it; but I guess this is as good a reason as downvoting something because it is "just too high". 🤷‍♂️
Got any sources to back up you claim that only about half the groups use multiclassing rules? I would have thought that it was a lot higher than ~50%.

Mind you, i think lots of people play single-class straight through these days. Everyone in my current campaign certainly is, even though multiclassing is allowed. Losing access to higher-level features is a steep price to pay for multiclassing in most circumstances. Exploiting the Hexblade is one of the exceptions, from an optimisation point of view.
